Sehwag's Latest Critique of Maxwell Continues Their Ongoing Feud Since IPL 2017: 'I Reached Out to Him...'

Virender Sehwag is well-known for his controversial remarks and candid demeanor. The former Indian cricketer recently criticized Glenn Maxwell and Liam Livingstone, suggesting that they lack the necessary drive and commitment to excel in the IPL. Both players have struggled with their performance in the current IPL 2025 season, with Maxwell representing PBKS and Livingstone playing for RCB.

In an interview with Cricbuzz, Sehwag expressed his discontent with the duo, claiming they treat the IPL as a vacation rather than a competitive endeavor. “I believe that Maxwell and Livingstone have lost their competitive edge. They come here for a holiday and leave after the season ends. They arrive, enjoy themselves, and depart without showing any real desire to fight for their team,” he remarked.

Virender Sehwag vs Glenn Maxwell: Ugly beef which goes back to IPL 2017

Maxwell Sehwag and Maxwell share a lengthy history, with their conflict originating during the 2017 IPL season when Maxwell served as the captain of the Punjab team, while Sehwag held the role of mentor for the franchise. Maxwell has characterized Sehwag's leadership style as dictatorial, claiming that he made key decisions unilaterally.

In his 2024 book, "Maxwell: The Showman," the 36-year-old revealed insights about his experiences with Sehwag. He noted, “We had discussions about the team's operations, and I believed we were aligned in our approach. How mistaken I was.”

Maxwell recounted that J Arunkumar, the new coach for that season, quickly realized that his role was largely nominal, with Sehwag effectively controlling the team's direction. In an effort to involve the coaching staff in decision-making, Maxwell suggested creating a WhatsApp group for team selections. While everyone else participated and shared their line-ups, Sehwag opted out. Ultimately, he asserted his authority by declaring that he alone would determine the starting eleven.

Maxwell illustrated Sehwag's management style with a specific incident involving Ishant Sharma. “Poor Ishant was advised not to attend our match in Mumbai, having been sidelined for some time. Despite this, he chose to come and prepared by bowling at full pace during warm-ups. Meanwhile, Eoin Morgan was informed he would be included in the lineup, taking the last overseas player spot from Matt Henry. Morgan objected, arguing it was unfair to drop Henry after just one match, leading to further adjustments where Morgan was excluded, allowing both Henry and Ishant to play,” he detailed in his book.

That season, Punjab failed to qualify for the playoffs, finishing in fifth place. The tension between Maxwell and Sehwag became particularly evident following Punjab's final league match, where they suffered a heavy defeat to Rising Pune Supergiant. Maxwell had offered to speak to the media after the game.
