Sehwag Slams Kishan’s ‘Brain Fade’, Sidhu Points Finger at Umpire

Former Indian cricketers Virender Sehwag and Navjot Singh Sidhu expressed differing opinions on Sunrisers Hyderabad batter Ishan Kishan's unusual dismissal in the match against Mumbai Indians on Wednesday at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium. Sunrisers faced their sixth loss of the season, in eight matches, remaining in the ninth position in the standings.

The incident occurred on the first ball of the third over during Sunrisers' innings when Ishan tried to glance a leg-side length delivery from Deepak Chahar, failed to connect properly, and then left the field despite no appeal from any Mumbai Indians players. Wicketkeeper Ryan Rickelton, who easily gathered the ball behind the stumps, was uncertain about whether to appeal for caught behind, while Chahar and captain Hardik Pandya appeared more concerned about the umpire initially signaling the delivery as a wide ball.

In fact, the footage suggested that umpire Vinod Seshan himself was perplexed by the delivery. He had originally deemed it a wide, but quickly changed his decision and raised his finger upon noticing Ishan leaving the field.

The SRH batter received a supportive gesture from Hardik for exhibiting the 'spirit of cricket', but his decision backfired after a replay revealed no spike on the Ultra Edge. Ishan, who was out for just one run off 4 balls, was seen berating himself in the dressing room after viewing the video.

What did Sidhu and Sehwag say?

Sidhu rather blamed the umpire for his decision to signal it out despite no appeal from Mumbai players. His tweet read: “Buying trouble is as easy as pie, but the carrying charges run pretty high … have you ever seen an umpire rule someone out without an appeal?”

Sehwag, On the other hand, I questioned Ishan's honesty, while sternly pointing out that he is not being compensated for performing the umpire's duties. Describing it as a clear moment of "brain fade," Sehwag believed that if Ishan had waited for the umpire's decision, Mumbai would have chosen to review, which could have clearly demonstrated that he was not out.

"Often, the mind does not function properly at that moment. It was brain fade. Ruk toh jaa. Umpire bhi paise le rahe hai (At least stop and wait for the umpire to make his decision. He is also being paid for his job). Allow him to carry out his responsibilities. I couldn't comprehend this honesty. If it had been a edge, it would have been more understandable because that would align with the spirit of the game. But it was neither out, the umpire was uncertain, and you suddenly started to walk away. Then, the umpire is also in a tough spot. Rocky Ponting used to say that my job was to bat, the umpire's job is to make the decision on the dismissal," he stated on Cricbuzz.

This dismissal continued Ishan's struggle with form in IPL 2025. Following his remarkable century in SRH's season opener against the Rajasthan Royals, he managed to score only 33 runs over the next seven innings, averaging just 5. 5.
