Team India, under the leadership of Rohit Sharma, commenced their campaign in the ICC Men's Champions Trophy 2025 with a victory, overcoming Bangladesh by six wickets at the Dubai International Stadium on Thursday. During the chase for 229 runs, India found themselves in a precarious position at 144/4, leading to some anxiety among fans regarding their ability to secure the win. Nevertheless, former Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag expressed unwavering confidence in the team's capabilities.
KL Rahul and Shubman Gill forged an unbroken partnership of 87 runs for the fifth wicket, guiding India to victory with 21 balls remaining and six wickets in hand. Gill concluded the match with an impressive score of 101, while Rahul contributed 41 runs.
Sehwag dismissed any concerns about Bangladesh potentially troubling India after they had reduced the score to 144/4. He remarked that Bangladesh does not possess the same caliber as teams like Australia or Pakistan, thus there was no cause for apprehension regarding the leadership of Najmul Hossain Shanto.
“I don’t believe there was any tension among the fans. It’s Bangladesh… you have all made me commend them as if they are an exceptional team,” Sehwag stated on Cricbuzz Live.
“Fearful of Bangladesh? I never experienced fear during my playing days, so why would I feel apprehensive today in this studio?” he added.
'It's Bangladesh, not Australia or Pakistan'
Sehwag remarked that Bangladesh does not possess the same calibre as Australia or Pakistan, indicating that there was no justification for fans to feel anxious or tense.
“It’s Bangladesh, not Australia or Pakistan, which can be quite unpredictable. I believe there was not even a 1% chance of fear in the hearts of any fan during that match," Sehwag stated.
He further noted that India could have completed the chase even sooner had a few wickets not fallen at inopportune moments.
“It was a straightforward match. We reached the target with nearly four overs remaining. Gill maintained his composure, playing at a measured pace. Had Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, or Shreyas Iyer batted for a longer duration, I could envision this match concluding in just 35 overs,” he added.
India's next encounter will be against Pakistan in the Champions Trophy 2025 on Sunday, February 23, at the Dubai International Stadium.
