As the Indian Premier League (IPL 2025) approaches, former Indian cricketer Suresh Raina expressed that the tournament elevates its standards each year, allowing young players to aspire to represent India immediately.
The Chennai Super Kings icon described the IPL as a celebration not just in India, but globally. He praised emerging talents such as Tilak Varma, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Rinku Singh, expressing his admiration for their skills.
"We have witnessed numerous players develop their abilities and leap to the international stage. India has secured victories in the World Cup, the Champions Trophy, and the T20 World Cup, and we have seen young athletes evolve into leaders. Consider Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and the many fast bowlers who have risen through the ranks of this league," Raina remarked.
Known as Mr. IPL for his remarkable consistency with CSK, the former left-handed batsman stated that if a young player accumulates 500 runs in an IPL season, they have a viable chance of being selected for the national team.
"Currently, we are witnessing an exciting new wave of cricketers. I am particularly fond of Tilak Varma, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Rinku Singh. Additionally, we have a new captain in Axar Patel. The key for young players is to remain focused, concentrate on their performance, and maintain consistency. Scoring 500 runs in a season can lead to national representation. Each IPL season presents a chance to grow, become bolder, and refine one’s skills and mindset. This is the essence of the IPL—rising to the occasion and consistently enhancing one’s game," he concluded.
‘IPL has become undisputed dady’ Robin Uthappa
Former Indian cricketer Robin Uthappa, who amassed 4,952 runs in 205 IPL matches, including 27 half-centuries and championship victories with KKR and CSK, remarked that the league has "elevated cricket to an entirely new level, enhancing the sport by two or three tiers."
"The pace of evolution has been so swift that it has left some individuals struggling to adapt. Cricket once held a certain charm, but that charm has now evolved into a faster, more intense, and adrenaline-fueled experience. The IPL has established itself as the preeminent 'father' of T20 leagues globally—it has truly matured," Uthappa, a JioStar expert, stated to the media ahead of the 18th edition of the IPL.
Uthappa emphasized that "innovation is fundamental to the IPL's success."
"Although it may seem like we have witnessed everything, I am confident that there is still much more to come. This season, we could see 1,000 sixes, a team scoring 300 runs in a single innings, or even a chase exceeding 275 runs. We might witness a double hat-trick or an extraordinary individual score surpassing 150. With the IPL, just when you believe you've seen it all, the game surprises you and declares, 'Wait, there’s more ahead!'" Uthappa concluded.
