New Delhi: A day after securing her second individual World Cup gold medal, Suruchi Phogat concluded her South American tournament by winning a mixed team gold alongside Saurabh Chaudhary in Lima on Wednesday. The Indian duo, who previously defeated fellow countrymen Manu Bhaker and Ravinder Singh to claim mixed team bronze in Buenos Aires last week, triumphed over China’s Yao Qianxun and Kai Hu with a score of 17-9 at the Las Palmas shooting range.
After falling behind 4-8 following the sixth series in the gold medal match, Phogat and Chaudhary rallied to win the next six series, only sharing points once, thereby asserting their dominance over the Chinese team. The Indians set the tone early in the first series, with Chaudhary achieving a perfect score of 10.9 to give India an initial advantage. However, the Chinese team responded by winning the next three series, establishing a 6-2 lead. At that point, the Indians called for a time-out, which marked the beginning of their comeback. Following a shared score of 20.7 in the eighth series, the Indians surged ahead, refusing to allow any further points to their opponents.
Suruchi once again shone brightly, demonstrating impressive consistency by scoring below 10 only twice in her 13 attempts. This performance compensated for some inconsistent shooting from Chaudhary, who unusually scored below 10 five times during the final. The former world No. 1 will reflect on the two World Cups with a sense of relief and satisfaction. After more than two years away from the spotlight, Chaudhary returns home with an individual bronze and both a bronze and a gold in mixed team events.
In contrast, the other Indian pair, Bhaker and Singh, were unable to secure a medal, losing their bronze medal playoff to China’s Ma Qianke and Yifan Zhang with a score of 16-6. The Chinese team quickly took control, racing to an 8-0 lead before India called for a time-out. Although Bhaker and Singh managed to close the gap to 10-6, the Chinese team won the next three sequences to claim the bronze medal. As a result, double Olympic medallist Bhaker returns with an individual silver, while Singh concludes his campaign without a medal.
