Philadelphia Eagles running back Saquon Barkley put his name on the record books on Super Bowl Sunday, breaking two major yardage records in the Eagles’ dominant win over the Kansas City Chiefs.

A record-breaking night

Barkley quickly made his mark in history by breaking Terrell Davis' long-held record for the most combined yards from scrimmage in both regular-season and postseason play on the very first play of the game. During his initial carry, the NFL Offensive Player of the Year maneuvered to the left for four yards, elevating his total to 2,764 yards and eclipsing Davis' 26-year-old record of 2,762 yards, which was established with the Denver Broncos in 1998.

Later in the first half, with the Eagles ahead 24-0, Barkley set another record previously held by Davis, this time for the most rushing yards in a single season, including playoff performances. With 4:49 remaining in the second quarter, Barkley rushed for nine yards, equaling Davis' mark of 2,476 yards. Shortly thereafter, he claimed the record for himself with a two-yard run off right guard, bringing his season total to 2,478 rushing yards.

A birthday to remember

On the occasion of his 28th birthday coinciding with Super Bowl Sunday, Barkley achieved yet another significant milestone during an already momentous evening. Prior to the game, he had accumulated a total of 2,447 rushing yards, comprising 2,005 yards from the regular season and 442 yards from the playoffs, leaving him merely 29 yards short of Davis’ record.

Additionally, Barkley approached the game with the opportunity to challenge another esteemed record—he was only 268 yards away from Darren Sproles' all-purpose yardage record of 3,027 yards, established in 2011. Although he did not reach that particular benchmark, his performance in Super Bowl LIX further cemented his reputation as one of the most formidable running backs in the history of the NFL.
