Sanju Samson's Battle with Form: How the Management is Holding Steady

Sanju Samson's Battle with Form: How the Management is Holding Steady

Sanju Samson's achievement of scoring three centuries in five T20 Internationals is now a distant memory, as the right-handed batsman currently faces challenges in accumulating runs. The Indian wicketkeeper-batter is evidently struggling to find his rhythm and has been particularly vulnerable to fast, short-pitched deliveries. In the current series against England, he has managed to score only 35 runs across four matches, indicating that the 30-year-old requires significant time at the crease to regain his form.

Former Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar believes that it is essential to continue supporting Sanju, as he prioritizes the team's success and remains aggressive against the bowling attack, despite his recent lack of runs.

Manjrekar also emphasizes that Sanju possesses the potential to be a match-winner, suggesting that players of his caliber should be afforded the opportunity to overcome their struggles, even in the face of repeated failures.

“When evaluating T20I batting talent, it is crucial to consider the impact a player can have when they are in form. Sanju Samson, when performing well, can score remarkable centuries and significantly enhance the team's chances of victory," Manjrekar stated in an interview with ESPNCricinfo.

"Such players are permitted to experience failures, and even extended periods of underperformance, as this is inherent to the nature of T20 cricket, where risks must be taken. It is hoped that there will be a particular innings that reignites his form,” he added.

Give Sanju Samson as many innings as possible

It is important to provide Sanju Samson with ample opportunities to bat. Notably, he boasts the highest strike rate of 177.54 among all T20I opening batsmen who have scored at least 500 runs.

Since assuming the opening position following last year's T20 World Cup victory, Sanju has accumulated over 500 runs, including three centuries and one half-century.

In the ongoing series against England, he has been dismissed three times by Jofra Archer and once by Saqib Mahmood, with his scores in the series being 26, 5, 3, and 1.

Manjrekar stated, "It is essential to ensure that Sanju Samson receives ample opportunities to bat, as his performance can be highly rewarding when he finds his rhythm."

He continued, "If it were another player struggling in a similar manner, and their best efforts only yielded scores of 40 or 50, one might consider a more limited opportunity. However, I am inclined to exercise considerable patience with the current iteration of Sanju Samson."

India has secured an unassailable 3-1 advantage in the five-match series. The final T20I between India and England is scheduled for Sunday at the Wankhede Stadium.
