India's wicketkeeper-batsman Sanju Samson recently underwent surgery to address a finger injury. Nevertheless, the Rajasthan Royals are reportedly not overly concerned, as he is anticipated to recover in time for the 2025 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The injury occurred during the fifth match of the home T20I series against England earlier this month, when he was hit by a delivery from fast bowler Jofra Archer. Following the incident, he was substituted, with Dhruv Jurel taking over his position on the field during the second innings.

As per a report from ESPNCricinfo, Samson is expected to require approximately one month for recovery post-surgery, suggesting he will have sufficient time to prepare for the 18th edition of the IPL, which is likely to commence in late March.

The injury sustained during the England series caused Samson to miss Kerala's Ranji Trophy quarterfinal match against Jammu & Kashmir in Pune on February 8.

A disappointing T20I series for Samson

After achieving three centuries across two series in late 2024 within the T20I format, Samson appeared to have solidified his place in the Indian team. However, his performance during the home series against England raised concerns, as he managed only 51 runs in five innings, with a strike rate of 118.60.

Samson, who scored a century in his last ODI appearance for India in December 2023, also found himself excluded from consideration for India's Champions Trophy squad after being omitted from Kerala's one-day team for the Vijay Hazare Trophy. This decision was made by Kerala's selectors following his absence from the preparatory camp prior to the white-ball tournament.

Consequently, Samson is set to return in IPL 2025, where he will once again take on the role of captain. The Rajasthan Royals reached the playoffs last season but were defeated by Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the second Qualifier.
