Riyan Parag's stint as captain in the current IPL 2025 concluded on Wednesday, as Sanju Samson is poised to reclaim his full-time leadership position and lead the Rajasthan Royals in their upcoming match against the Punjab Kings. This announcement follows Samson's clearance by the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru to resume his wicketkeeping responsibilities.

Earlier this year, during the home T20I series against England, Samson sustained a finger injury. Due to his incomplete recovery at the beginning of IPL 2025, he appointed Parag as the interim captain for the first three matches. Despite this, Samson participated in all three games as an impact substitute, contributing with his batting while Dhruv Jurel took over the wicketkeeping role.

On Wednesday, the NCA confirmed that Samson is fit to resume wicketkeeping, indicating his return as captain for the Royals' next match against Punjab in Chandigarh on Saturday.

A statement from Rajasthan's media team noted, "Rajasthan Royals captain Sanju Samson has been cleared by the National Cricket Academy (NCA) to resume wicketkeeping duties after a recovery period. This clearance follows a comprehensive evaluation of his fitness by the NCA medical team."

"With this encouraging news, Samson will return to his full leadership role and take charge in the team's next match against the Punjab Kings. The franchise is optimistic about Samson's recovery and eagerly anticipates his return to action behind the stumps and as the team's leader."

RR experienced an unfavorable beginning in the IPL 2025 season. They were defeated by Sunrisers Hyderabad in a match characterized by a high score, followed by another loss to the reigning champions, Kolkata Knight Riders, at their temporary home in Guwahati. Nevertheless, RR made a remarkable recovery in their concluding match at the Barsapara Stadium, securing a victory over Chennai Super Kings. Parag received commendation for his leadership during this game.
