Sanju Samson Calls for IPL Rule Change After ‘Most Challenging Decision’

Rajasthan Royals captain Sanju Samson expressed that he has not yet come to terms with the franchise's choice to release Jos Buttler prior to the IPL 2025 mega-auction, describing it as "one of the most challenging decisions" he has faced. Buttler was acquired by Gujarat Titans during the auction held last November.

Joining the Royals in 2018, Buttler made a significant impact over his seven-year tenure, amassing 3,055 runs—the highest by any player for the Rajasthan Royals—in 83 matches, with an average of 41.84 and a strike rate of 147.79. His most remarkable season was in 2022, where he scored 863 runs, including four centuries, matching the record for the most centuries in a single season. This performance also marked the second-highest individual score in a single IPL edition, following Virat Kohli's legendary 2016 season.

As the IPL 2025 mega-auction approached, Rajasthan retained six players, but Buttler was not among them. Reflecting on this decision, Samson expressed a desire for a revision of the IPL retention policy.

"The IPL provides an opportunity to lead a team and compete at the highest level, fostering close friendships," Samson stated in an interview with Jiostar. "Jos Buttler is one of my closest friends. We have played together for seven years, and our extensive batting partnership has allowed us to understand each other deeply. He has been like an elder brother to me; I would consult him whenever I had uncertainties. When I assumed the captaincy in 2021, he served as my vice-captain and played a crucial role in my development as a leader.

"Parting ways with him has been one of the most difficult decisions I have had to make. During the England series, I confided in him over dinner that I was still struggling with it. If I could alter one aspect of the IPL, it would be the rule regarding player releases every three years. While there are benefits to this system, on a personal level, it disrupts the connections and relationships built over time. He was part of our family. What more can I say?"

'Vaibhav Suryavanshi ready for IPL.'

One of the most significant acquisitions for Rajasthan during the mega auction was the signing of 13-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi, who has now become the youngest cricketer to secure an IPL contract. Samson expressed confidence in the Bihar-based player, noting his impressive ability to hit powerful sixes during training at the academy, suggesting that he is poised to make his IPL debut.

"He exudes confidence. He was hitting sixes out of the ground at the academy. What more can I do? It is essential to recognize his strengths, support him, and provide guidance as an elder brother would.

"He appears prepared. The focus should be on maintaining his physical fitness and ensuring a relaxed atmosphere, which is a hallmark of RR, while also providing him with the necessary backing. You never know; in a few years, he could be representing India. I believe he is ready to participate in the IPL and make a significant impact."
