Sanjay Manjrekar Critiques RCB: Claims AB de Villiers Played for the Wrong Franchise

AB de Villiers is widely regarded as one of the greatest players to have represented Royal Challengers Bangalore, but according to former India cricketer-turned-commentator Sanjay Manjrekar, RCB might not have been the ideal fit for him. During a discussion on Star Sports, Manjrekar took a dig at the IPL franchise, claiming it hindered de Villiers's full potential.
The conversation began with Manjrekar being asked to compare de Villiers with Suryakumar Yadav and whether SKY had surpassed him. While Manjrekar praised both players, even ranking Surya above ABD in T20Is, he acknowledged de Villiers’s superior skills in Tests and ODIs. However, the discussion took an interesting turn when Manjrekar shifted focus to RCB, arguing that the franchise didn’t use de Villiers to his full potential in T20 cricket.
"AB was incredible, but in the IPL, we didn’t get the best out of him. He wasn’t used properly," Manjrekar said. "He should’ve batted higher. And, honestly, he played for the wrong franchise. If he had been with a different team, we would’ve witnessed the true greatness of AB de Villiers."

Across 184 matches and 14 seasons in the IPL, de Villiers accumulated a total of 5,162 runs, with 640 of those coming during his time with Delhi Capitals (formerly Daredevils). De Villiers has played some memorable innings for RCB, including two centuries, with his unbeaten 129 against Gujarat Lions in 2016 being particularly remarkable.
