Samson’s Champions Trophy Hopes Uncertain as BCCI Investigates Vijay Hazare Absence

The selection process for the Champions Trophy squad is approaching. Sanju Samson is a potential candidate for inclusion in the 15-member team as a wicketkeeper. However, his prospects have been significantly impacted by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), which intends to investigate his absence from the Vijay Hazare Trophy representing Kerala.
This decision follows the BCCI's recent mandate requiring all players to participate in domestic cricket for their state teams to be eligible for national team selection.
As reported by the senior BCCI officials and selectors have expressed dissatisfaction with Samson's choice to forgo participation in this key domestic 50-over tournament.
Previously, the Kerala Cricket Association indicated that they did not select Samson after he communicated his unavailability for a preparatory camp prior to the tournament.
A source quoted by TOI remarked, "The selectors and the board have emphasized the significance of domestic cricket. Last year, Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer lost their central contracts for missing domestic matches without prior approval."
"In Samson's situation, the board and selectors have not received any explanation for his absence from the tournament. It is only known that he spends a considerable amount of time in Dubai," the source added.
'Selectors want valid reasons'
The report indicates that the selectors are seeking a valid explanation from Sanju Samson regarding his absence from the tournament.
"The selectors require a legitimate justification. Failing to provide one may jeopardize his chances for the ODI season. Samson has experienced a tumultuous relationship with the KCA, which must be resolved for him to participate in domestic cricket," stated the source.
"It is unacceptable for a misunderstanding between him and the state association to result in his absence from matches. He did compete in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy prior to the Vijay Hazare Trophy," the source continued.
For those unfamiliar, Sanju Samson has been included in India's squad for the forthcoming five-match T20I series against England, commencing on January 22 in Kolkata.
Samson is viewed as a strong candidate for one of the two wicketkeeper positions, alongside KL Rahul, Dhruv Jurel, and Rishabh Pant, for the upcoming Champions Trophy.
Recently, the BCCI has mandated that all centrally contracted players must participate in domestic cricket. Non-compliance with these guidelines may lead to disciplinary measures against the player involved.
