Sam Konstas, the right-handed batsman aiming for a spot in the Australia Test squad for the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy, is making waves after his Big Bash League (BBL) debut with Sydney Thunder on Tuesday. He scored an impressive 56 runs off just 27 balls, helping his team chase down a target of 183 against the Adelaide Strikers at Manuka Oval in Canberra.
Despite Sydney Thunder's captain, David Warner (7), and Cameron Bancroft (6) getting out early, Konstas made sure the team got off to a strong start. He reached his half-century in just 20 balls, setting a record for the fastest fifty by a Sydney Thunder player.
At just 19 years and 76 days old, Konstas has also become the youngest player ever to score a fifty in the Big Bash League.
Konstas put up a solid performance, scoring 56 runs from 27 balls, including 8 fours and 2 sixes. Unfortunately, his wicket in the seventh over set back Sydney Thunder, giving Adelaide Strikers the advantage.
With 34 runs needed off the last 2 overs, it looked like Adelaide Strikers were in control. But Daniel Sams from Thunder had other ideas, blasting 31 runs off Lloyd Pope in the second-to-last over, turning the game around for a Thunder victory.
Sams started the over with back-to-back sixes. Under pressure, Pope then bowled a wide. Sensing his moment, Sams capitalized, hitting 4, 6, 4, and 4 off the last four balls of the over.
Sydney Thunder clinched the victory over Adelaide Strikers, finishing with two wickets to spare and just two balls left in the game.
Adelaide Strikers fall apart when the heat is on.
Adelaide Strikers seemed to have the game in the bag as they approached the last two overs, but Daniel Sams really turned up the heat on Lloyd Pope. In a surprising twist, Sydney Thunder snatched the victory.
Earlier in the match, Adelaide Strikers set a solid score of 182/8 in their twenty overs, thanks to Jamie Overton's impressive unbeaten 45 runs.
The Big Bash League (BBL) kicked off on Sunday, December 15, with the season opener featuring Melbourne Stars against Perth Scorchers.
So far, Hobart Hurricanes and Brisbane Heat haven't played any matches in this BBL season. Meanwhile, Perth Scorchers, Sydney Sixers, Sydney Thunder, Adelaide Strikers, Melbourne Renegades, and Melbourne Stars have all had their first game.
