Sam Konstas' Debut Draws Langer's Sehwag Parallel

Sam Konstas, making his debut, marked his entry with an impressive half-century, scoring 60 runs off just 65 balls on the first day of the fourth Test against India at the MCG. The 19-year-old's bold batting style propelled Australia to a strong position of 112 for 1 at lunch.
Opting to bat on what seemed to be an excellent pitch, Konstas quickly demonstrated the high expectations surrounding him in Australian cricket. His explosive innings featured daring shots and a fearless demeanor, as he took on India's leading fast bowler, Jasprit Bumrah, with remarkable reverse lap scoops and powerful drives.
Teaming up with Usman Khawaja, who remained unbeaten on 38, the pair forged a solid partnership, contributing 89 runs for the first wicket and allowing Australia to establish a firm foothold in the match.
Former Australian opener Justin Langer expressed admiration for Konstas's self-assurance and aggressive style, likening him to the legendary Virender Sehwag. Sehwag is celebrated for transforming Test batting with his dynamic approach, and Langer noted that Konstas exhibited a comparable level of confidence.
"That's the word (awe). Before the game, Sam Konstas was very confident, had been speaking a lot. He has backed it up with his actions, has been incredible to watch. He reminded me of Virender Sehwag back in 2003, when he scored 195 off 233 balls on Day 1. He blew us away, we couldn't believe the confidence," Langer remarked during his commentary on Star Sports.
Took the pressure off Khawaja
The Australian teenager commenced his innings with a degree of caution, experiencing several play-and-miss instances during Bumrah's initial over. However, once he established his rhythm, he became unstoppable. His first reverse lap-scoop off Bumrah was succeeded by a colossal six over mid-on, and he continued to accumulate runs with another reverse scoop boundary, this time directed wide of third man.
Langer opines that this assertive style of play has also benefited his partner, Usman Khawaja, who has faced challenges throughout the series.
“We observe that Konstas's debut performance has liberated Usman Khawaja. He has appeared more comfortable, having previously batted alongside David Warner, who adopted an aggressive approach. Now, with a partner who shares a similar mindset, the pressure on him has significantly diminished,” Langer remarked.
