Ravi Shastri, a cricket legend and former head coach of the national team, shared his insights on Virat Kohli's standing as one of the greatest cricketers in history during an interview with The ICC review. He emphasized Kohli's exceptional discipline and his keen awareness of match situations as distinguishing factors in his performance.

Shastri noted that in recent years, Kohli may have attempted to surpass his own strengths, which can sometimes lead to challenges. However, he has returned to his core strengths, focusing on taking singles and playing grounded shots, while also being capable of hitting big when necessary. He remarked that some of the most successful players in one-day cricket, particularly during chases, are those who excel at this approach.

He further explained that accumulating singles effortlessly alleviates pressure, especially when partnered with a dynamic player like Shreyas Iyer, who can aggressively score runs, thereby making the game easier.

Drawing parallels between Kohli and other sporting icons, Shastri stated that audiences are drawn to athletes who exude energy. He mentioned figures such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, Novak Djokovic, and Rafael Nadal, highlighting the charisma they bring to their respective sports, which captivates fans.

Kohli has often been compared to his former teammate Sachin Tendulkar. Reflecting on this comparison, Shastri remarked that it underscores the significant sacrifices made by individuals at the top of their game. He recalled Tendulkar's dedication, noting that despite his love for food and social activities, he consistently prioritized his cricketing commitments.

In the current tournament, Kohli stands as India's leading run-scorer with 217 runs across four matches, boasting a strike rate of 83.14. He is currently the fourth-highest run-scorer overall and has the potential to finish the tournament at the top.
