On Wednesday, R Ashwin wrapped up an impressive career by announcing his retirement from international cricket in Brisbane. He made the announcement after the last day of the third Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test match, which ended in a draw against Australia due to rain. Ashwin joined captain Rohit Sharma at the press conference to share the news before heading out.
Once he made his retirement official, social media exploded with reactions as teammates, former players, and fans expressed their admiration. Indian cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar also chimed in, praising Ashwin for his significant contributions to the sport.
Sachin Tendulkar honors the memory.
Sachin took to X to share his thoughts, saying, “Ashwin, I’ve always respected how you play the game with both your mind and heart working together. Whether it’s mastering the carrom ball or stepping up with important runs, you always know how to come out on top.”
It's been amazing to see you transform from a promising talent into one of India's top match-winners. Your journey really highlights that true greatness comes from being willing to try new things and grow.
"Your legacy will motivate everyone. Best of luck for your second innings," he said.
Ashwin sat out the Brisbane Test and wasn't part of the starting XI for the first match either. However, he made it back into the lineup for the second Test. At 38 years old, Ashwin has already claimed 537 Test wickets, making him the seventh-highest wicket-taker in Test history. He ranks as the second-highest for India, just behind Kapil Dev, who took 619 wickets.
Ashwin was a major figure in the Indian dressing room throughout his career, racking up 37 five-wicket hauls in 106 Tests, tying him for second place with Shane Warne in that category. Muttiah Muralitharan leads the pack with an impressive 67 five-wicket hauls. As his career progressed, Ashwin also made a name for himself as a reliable middle-order batsman, stepping up with some key innings.
He finished his career with 11 Test Player-of-the-Series awards, which is tied for the most in the world, along with 10 match awards, making him one of the top Indian players in that regard, especially among bowlers.
