SWOT Breakdown for Bangladesh in Champions Trophy 2025: Powerful Pace Attack, Vulnerable Middle-Order

The ICC Men's Champions Trophy 2025 is imminent. This prestigious eight-team tournament is set to commence on February 19, featuring an opening match between the host nation, Pakistan, and New Zealand. Bangladesh, which reached the semi-finals in the previous Champions Trophy held in 2017, finds itself in Group A alongside Pakistan, New Zealand, and India. Under the leadership of Nazmul Hossain Shanto, the team will kick off its campaign against India on February 20 at the Dubai International Stadium.

Bangladesh is currently undergoing a transition in the white-ball formats following the departure of prominent players such as Shakib Al Hasan and Tamim Iqbal. The team is primarily built around Shanto, although he is currently struggling with his form. The middle order features seasoned players like Mushfiqur Rahim and Mahmudullah, whose performances will be crucial for Bangladesh's chances of advancing to the semi-finals.

One of the squad's strengths lies in its fast-bowling unit, spearheaded by Taskin Ahmed, and supported by Tanzim Hasan and the raw pace of Nahid Rana. Mustafizur Rahman also adds depth to the bowling lineup. However, the spin bowling department has not maintained its previous effectiveness.

Additionally, Bangladesh's fielding has been a concern. In anticipation of the match against India, Shanto has expressed his determination for the team to strive for championship glory. "We are heading to the Champions Trophy with the aim of becoming champions. Every team in this tournament has the potential to be champions, as they are all of high quality. I have faith in our team's capabilities, and I believe there will be no undue pressure," stated Shanto.

Recent form:

Bangladesh approaches the Champions Trophy with a disappointing record in One Day Internationals. The team recently suffered a 0-3 defeat against the West Indies, where the opposition successfully chased down the targets in all three matches. In the final ODI, Bangladesh set a formidable score of over 320 runs but still fell short in the contest.

Prior to the series against the West Indies, Bangladesh also faced a setback, losing a three-match ODI series to Afghanistan.

In the 2023 ODI World Cup, Bangladesh managed to secure only two victories out of nine matches, ultimately concluding the tournament in eighth place on the points table.
