On Thursday, Sunrisers Hyderabad introduced a novel bowling option during their IPL 2025 match against the reigning champions, Kolkata Knight Riders, at Eden Gardens in Kolkata. In his debut in the league, Kamindu Mendis made history by becoming the first ambidextrous bowler to take a wicket in the tournament's history.
Kamindu, who has gained recognition while representing Sri Lanka for his ability to bowl both left-arm orthodox and right-arm off-spin, captivated IPL fans and commentators alike as he showcased his talent in the single over he bowled against KKR. He began by bowling left-handed to Angkrish Raghuvanshi and then switched to his right arm to deliver to Venkatesh Iyer in the same over, ultimately dismissing Raghuvanshi shortly after he reached his half-century.
During this remarkable over, Pommie Mbangwa, a former Zimbabwean cricketer, remarked on commentary, “He bowled accurately with both arms. But it must be confusing for a batter, right?”
The all-rounder from Sri Lanka was acquired for INR 75 lakhs in the auction held in November. Prior to the IPL season, he tied the knot with his long-time partner, Nishni, but chose to forgo their honeymoon in order to participate in the tournament in India. Pathum Gunawardana, the couple's wedding planner, stated: "They are currently enjoying a brief honeymoon in Haputale. They have opted not to travel abroad for their honeymoon as the player is dedicated to competing for the Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL and will commence his training as soon as possible."
KKR set 201-run target
The struggling middle order of Kolkata Knight Riders finally made an impact, as Iyer responded to his detractors with a rapid fifty off just 25 balls, while Raghuvanshi contributed a smooth half-century, helping KKR reach a total of 200/6. The newly formed opening duo faced difficulties, with Quinton de Kock (1) and Sunil Narine (7) dismissed early after Sunrisers Hyderabad chose to bowl first. However, a solid partnership of 81 runs between captain Ajinkya Rahane and Raghuvanshi established a strong base for a challenging score.
