SA20's new dawn: IPL legends chase fresh glory in South Africa

Keshav Maharaj, the captain of the Durban Super Giants, expressed his astonishment at Kane Williamson remaining unsold during the IPL 2025 mega auction. The New Zealand captain, who was once a key player for Sunrisers Hyderabad, has faced significant challenges since sustaining a knee injury while fielding for the Gujarat Titans in IPL 2023. In an attempt to make a spectacular catch near the boundary, Williamson landed awkwardly on his knee, marking what would likely be one of his final appearances in the IPL. In 2024, he participated in only two matches for GT.
Consequently, it was noteworthy when Williamson chose to forgo the New Zealand central contract last year in favor of joining the SA20 league. As the third season of the tournament commences today, the New Zealand skipper has been diligently training in the nets over the past few days. He recently concluded a remarkable Test series against England, amassing 395 runs across three matches and showcasing his enduring talent. At the age of 34, while the opportunities in T20 cricket may be diminishing, the SA20 league presents a potential avenue for Williamson to extend his career.
"When I learned about it, I sent him a direct message. I was taken aback that he responded, given his stature. With his extensive achievements, having secured numerous titles for New Zealand and in franchise tournaments, he is a remarkable leader and an exceptionally skilled player. He is, without a doubt, the finest batsman I have ever bowled to in international cricket. His timing and skill are unparalleled. He is a batter who adapts to conditions. We brought him on board to enhance our lineup and provide stability. While we possess considerable power-hitting capabilities, we lacked an anchor last year, which is where we believe he will excel," Maharaj remarked to The Hindustan Times during a discussion at the Captains' Meet on Wednesday.
Williamson, Jonny Bairstow, and Dinesh Karthik share a notable similarity: each has played a crucial role in their respective IPL teams before gradually diminishing in prominence. Throughout his IPL career, Williamson has amassed a total of 2128 runs, with 2101 of those runs scored while representing Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), including a season in 2018 where he claimed the Orange Cap. Following Williamson's impressive performance, Bairstow emerged the following year, forming a formidable partnership with David Warner that shattered numerous records, including the previous record for the highest opening partnership in IPL history.
Fast forward six seasons, Bairstow found himself unsold at the auction, despite being a pre-signing for the Joburg Super Kings. His last Test appearance was in March, and he played his most recent ODI in 2023. Joburg captain Faf du Plessis expressed confidence in Bairstow's potential, emphasizing the importance of his contributions in the format he excels in.
"We possess significant batting depth. A player like Jonny Bairstow, who has excelled in white-ball cricket, has much to prove to English cricket as he seeks to reestablish his place in the squad. When you have a player who is both hungry and eager to perform, it creates a very positive environment," Du Plessis remarked to The Hindustan Times.
What to expect from Dinesh Karthik
With SA20 poised to emerge as a formidable T20 tournament in the coming years, it is appropriate that seasoned IPL veterans, equipped with extensive experience, are fostering a harmonious blend of youth and expertise across the six franchises. Notably, David Miller's Paarl Royals features two players whose IPL journeys have been markedly different.
Karthik, who announced his retirement from all forms of cricket last June after concluding his tenure with Royal Challengers Bengaluru, made an unexpected return by signing to play in South Africa, thus becoming the first Indian cricketer to participate in SA20. He will be joined by Joe Root, who has sparked considerable interest as the only member of the renowned Fab Four yet to compete in the IPL, but was acquired by Paarl for reasons articulated by the captain.
"We are eagerly anticipating the season with these two players in particular. For me, Joe Root contributes significantly beyond mere on-field success. He possesses a wealth of experience and is undoubtedly one of the finest batters in history, as evidenced by his performances in Test matches. While I recognize that this is a different format, the stability he brings to the team is essential, especially in home conditions. We intend to leverage his skills closely for our success. Additionally, as an individual, he enriches the environment, particularly for the many young players who are deeply passionate about the game. His extensive experience will be invaluable in nurturing the sport," Miller stated in an interview with the Hindustan Times.
"Dinesh Karthik brings a vast reservoir of experience. Our team is predominantly young, which is thrilling. Having him on board this year has been particularly meaningful. I have known him for 12 to 13 years, including our time together at Punjab Kings. It is a pleasure to play alongside him, especially given his vibrant personality and role as an ambassador for the game. The insights he can impart from his long career will greatly benefit the younger players," he added.
