Ryan Rickelton Reacts to SKY’s Incredible Six vs KKR: ‘Suryakumar Yadav is a Joke’

For Suryakumar Yadav, there may not be much motivation to step onto the field when his team requires 26 runs from 55 balls. However, he chooses to entertain by scoring an impressive 27 runs off just 9 balls. One of his two sixes leaves spectators in awe, and before they can fully react, he follows it up with three additional fours and another six.

In the IPL 2025 match against the Kolkata Knight Riders at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, Suryakumar Yadav was not the standout player for the Mumbai Indians. With a young debutant, Ashwani Kumar, taking the wickets of Quinton de Kock, Ajinkya Rahane, Andre Russell, and Manish Pandey, your team managed to bowl out the opposition for a mere 116 runs. Additionally, another young overseas player, Ryan Rickelton, scored his first IPL fifty, overshadowing Yadav's contributions.

Yet, Suryakumar Yadav possesses a remarkable ability to captivate the audience. He struck Andre Russell for a six on just the second ball of his innings. The delivery was a length ball on the fifth stump. While most batsmen would typically attempt to play it square on the off-side, aiming to evade the point fielder, Yadav took a bold step forward. He adeptly shifted his weight to the back foot—something he is quite capable of—and executed a shot that was part flick, part sweep, and part scoop, sending the ball soaring for a six over fine leg.

Let’s be frank: he has executed this shot numerous times in both the IPL and for the Indian national team. However, the distinctiveness of this particular shot, combined with its high level of difficulty and low success rate, ensures that it remains a source of admiration each time he performs it.

'Suryakumar Yadav is a joke': Ryan Rickelton

In his inaugural season in the IPL, Ryan Rickelton enjoyed a prime view from the non-striker's end. While he contributed an impressive unbeaten 62 runs, he acknowledged that he could never aspire to emulate Surya's batting style, referring to him as a "joke."

"I mentioned to Quinny (de Kock) that SKY (Suryakumar Yadav) is a joke; he performs feats that I can't achieve or even imagine. He has executed that shot numerous times, and while I won't attempt it, I'm grateful to have him on our team," remarked the South African wicketkeeper-batter.

Just prior to hitting a six, Suryakumar joined the ranks of elite Indian T20 batters, becoming only the fifth Indian to surpass 8000 runs in this format. The players ahead of him include Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan, and Suresh Raina, with Surya boasting the highest strike rate among them.

Debutant Ashwani Kumar's remarkable figures of 4 for 24, along with Rickelton's unbeaten 62, led the Mumbai Indians to a convincing eight-wicket victory. This marked the five-time champions' first win of the 18th season following two consecutive losses. Choosing to bowl first, MI capitalized on Kumar's outstanding performance to dismiss KKR for just 116 runs, successfully chasing down the target in 12.5 overs.

Left-arm pacer Kumar made history as the first Indian to take four wickets on his IPL debut, significantly contributing to KKR's collapse, as they were bowled out in 16.2 overs.

Angkrish Raghuvanshi was KKR's top scorer, managing 26 runs off 16 balls.
