Ruturaj Gaikwad's aspirations to guide the Chennai Super Kings through challenging times were dashed on Thursday when he was ruled out for the remainder of IPL 2025 due to a hairline fracture in his elbow, which he sustained during the match against the Rajasthan Royals. This injury is particularly detrimental as CSK is currently facing a four-match losing streak, and Gaikwad has been a key player in a batting lineup that has struggled to meet target scores this season.

Head coach Stephen Fleming announced Gaikwad's absence during the pre-match press conference prior to their game against the Kolkata Knight Riders at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. With Gaikwad out of action, attention now shifts to the experienced MS Dhoni, who will take over the captaincy for the first time since leading CSK to a remarkable IPL 2023 championship.

The 28-year-old Gaikwad shared his feelings of disappointment and gratitude on CSK’s social media platforms. In a heartfelt video message, he stated, “I am truly saddened to miss the remainder of the IPL due to this unfortunate elbow injury. I want to express my gratitude to everyone for your support; it means a great deal to me.”

CSK's season has taken a downturn following their initial victory over the Mumbai Indians. Currently positioned ninth in the points table with only two points and a negative net run rate of -0.889, they are in urgent need of the stability and runs that Gaikwad provides at the top of the order.

Gaikwad on Dhoni

  In light of his absence, Gaikwad is placing his trust in Dhoni – the cherished figure of CSK – and humorously referred to him as the “young wicketkeeper” who will guide the team.

“Yes, this season has posed its challenges, but we now have a young wicketkeeper at the helm, and I am optimistic that we can turn things around. I will be there with the team, providing support from the dugout,” he remarked with a smile.

“I would have loved to contribute to lifting the team out of this predicament, but some factors are beyond our control. I look forward to supporting the boys for the remainder of the campaign, and I hope for a strong finish to the season,” Gaikwad continued.

With the team facing significant challenges, Dhoni's return to leadership could provide the necessary boost for CSK to initiate a turnaround.
