Chennai Super Kings' skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad stirred up some buzz online with a playful jab at IPL rivals Royal Challengers Bengaluru during an event in their hometown. While attending Bengaluru's INFYusion event organized by Infosys, Gaikwad faced a little hiccup when the microphone he received decided to go silent. When the host pointed it out, Gaikwad couldn't resist and joked, "Must be an RCB fan," which got the crowd reacting with both cheers and boos at the same time.
Gaikwad's clever remarks won over CSK fans, but they didn't sit well with RCB supporters. The rivalry between RCB and CSK, often referred to as the Kaveri or Southern derby, has a long history filled with intense matches. This year, things got particularly heated when RCB eliminated CSK from the IPL playoffs, leading to some serious tension between the fan bases. Since then, the animosity has been pretty noticeable on social media, as shown in the X posts below.
Gaikwad's recollections from the IPL
Gaikwad has had his fair share of moments against RCB. He reminisced about his debut as captain, which was against RCB, and reminded everyone of the outcome. "One standout moment for me—though not everyone might agree—was my first match as IPL captain against RCB, and we came out on top. Plus, getting to captain MS Dhoni was pretty special too. I'm really thankful for that," he shared.
He took over the CSK captaincy just days before the IPL 2024 season kicked off, with the legendary MS Dhoni passing the torch. Gaikwad has had a solid run in the IPL, scoring 635 runs in 2021, 590 in 2023, and 583 earlier this year in IPL 2024. Still, he probably wished his first full season as CSK's captain would have gone better, as the team just missed out on the Playoffs.
