Rohit's Rut Continues in IPL 2025, RCB Exploit Familiar Weakness

Rohit Sharma's streak of disappointing performances continued during the IPL 2025 match between the Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). The right-handed batsman has faced challenges throughout the 18th season of this prestigious T20 tournament. While chasing a target of 222, Rohit displayed his intent early on by hitting Bhuvneshwar Kumar for a six in the first over.
In the following over, bowled by Yash Dayal, Rohit struck two consecutive fours, leading many to believe that it might be his night. However, the left-arm pacer quickly turned the tide, dismissing the 37-year-old captain shortly thereafter.
On the fourth delivery of the second over, Yash Dayal delivered an inswinger that sharply deviated back, eluding Rohit's drive. The ball passed the inside edge and struck the middle of the leg stump, resulting in Rohit departing after scoring 17 runs off 9 balls.
Left-arm seamers have consistently posed challenges for Rohit in white-ball cricket, so it was expected that RCB would choose to start with Yash Dayal rather than the more established Josh Hazlewood. Following Rohit's dismissal, RCB promptly removed Dayal from the bowling attack and brought in the Australian fast bowler, indicating that the strategy to utilize a left-arm pacer in the second over was specifically designed to target Rohit.
In the 2025 edition of the IPL, Rohit Sharma recorded scores of 0, 8, 13, and 17, totaling 38 runs across four matches. The seasoned player was unable to participate in the Mumbai Indians' previous game against the Lucknow Super Giants due to a knee injury sustained during practice.
Nevertheless, he returned for the match against RCB after receiving medical clearance for this significant encounter.
Rohit has struggled as a batsman in the IPL over the past five seasons, having surpassed the 400-run threshold only once, which occurred in the previous season.
Virat Kohli takes RCB past 200
In the earlier match, the Mumbai Indians won the toss and chose to bowl first against RCB. The visiting team scored 221 runs for the loss of 5 wickets in their allotted twenty overs, thanks to half-centuries from Virat Kohli and Rajat Patidar.
Kohli and Patidar contributed significantly with scores of 67 and 64, respectively. Additionally, Jitesh Sharma provided valuable support with a quick 40 runs off 19 balls, helping RCB surpass the 220-run threshold at Wankhede Stadium.
Jasprit Bumrah made his return to competitive cricket in this match against RCB. Although he did not take any wickets, he delivered an economical performance, finishing with figures of 0/29 in his four overs.
