Rohit’s Powerplay Aggression Thrived with Kohli’s Backup: Aaron Finch

Virat Kohli deserves significant recognition for the evolution of Rohit Sharma's batting during the powerplay. If this seems like mere fan speculation, consider the insights of Aaron Finch, Australia's T20 World Cup-winning captain. Finch expressed admiration for Rohit Sharma, noting that the Indian captain has taken the initiative to alter the approach of India's top-order batting in white-ball formats. He emphasized that this transformation was made possible by having a player of Kohli's caliber ready to step in from the changing room.
Following India's exit from the semi-finals of the 2022 tournament, Rohit resolved to abandon the cautious strategy that characterized the top-order batting. He prioritized scoring rate over the value of his wicket, which is crucial in limited-overs cricket. Finch remarked that Rohit's current batting style in white-ball cricket entails considerable risk, a strategy he can adopt knowing that Kohli will stabilize the innings at No. 3 should he get dismissed early.
"When you observe Rohit's deliberate decision-making, he has Virat coming in behind him at number three. This allows him the freedom to take risks, knowing that there's someone capable of rectifying any errors he might make. However, it's important that not every player on the team adopts an aggressive approach from the outset. That's a valid point, and I recognize that Rohit has successfully implemented this strategy," Finch stated to PTI.
Finch further noted that if Kohli maintains a strike rate of 150, he has fulfilled his role effectively. There is no need for him to aim for a strike rate of 200, as that would entail excessive risk. Kohli's responsibilities differ. After a few less impressive seasons, he achieved a strike rate close to 140 in 2023, and in 2024, he had his best IPL season, amassing 741 runs at a strike rate of 154.70.
If his strike rate improves from 140 to 150, he can certainly achieve that without any issues. However, one must consider how often he has found himself in situations where he needed to rescue RCB after the rest of the team has faltered. As I mentioned earlier, I would rely on the runs from a top-three player consistently, as this provides the rest of the batting order with greater freedom and allows for a more aggressive approach from the other batsmen, he elaborated.
Does Virat Kohli need to adjust his playing style for RCB to maximize their potential, especially given that their bowling attack may not be as strong as others? "The key question is whether you aim for 700 or 800 runs, or if you are content with 400. If you want Virat to increase his strike rate, he can certainly do that, but it comes with increased risk and may affect his consistency," Finch remarked.
‘No need for Kohli to change anything’: Finch
Finch stated, "There is no significant need for Kohli to alter his approach. Perhaps a slight adjustment in tempo could be beneficial, but overall, I would trust his ability to score runs every day. From there, you can build your team around a player of his caliber."
He acknowledged that the game has evolved dramatically regarding how teams approach Powerplay overs, yet each player's strengths vary.
"It’s not solely about players who can come in and strike at 200 from the first ball. Expecting seven batters to perform at that level within one team is unrealistic. When things don’t go well, it can lead to a loss. While the game has advanced significantly in the past two seasons, it is still essential to have a solid foundation and a player who can anchor the innings and score deeply."
Rohit's strike rate in the IPL closely resembles that of Kohli; however, during the latter stages of his T20I career, he adopted a more aggressive approach and achieved notable success at the top of the batting order.
Finch, a former distinguished opener, provided insight into the caliber of players within the Mumbai Indians lineup, who are capable of maintaining momentum even when challenges arise. He stated, "When you consider Rohit's performance, it's important to recognize the quality of players surrounding him. He has consistently had a solid foundation that allows the team to build their innings around him. This enables him to take risks and aim for dominance, hitting sixes early in his innings. Nevertheless, one must appreciate the team dynamics that support this approach." The Mumbai Indians' roster included key players such as Hardik Pandya, Suryakumar Yadav, and Tilak Varma in both the top and middle order.
