Mohammed Shami has been a key player in the Indian bowling lineup for quite some time. Fans probably can’t remember the last time he wasn’t a crucial part of the team. However, that changed after the 2023 ODI World Cup final when he suffered an ankle injury that required surgery, sidelining him for almost a year. Now, he’s back in action playing domestic cricket and is set to participate in the Vijay Hazare Trophy for Bengal starting December 21.
While Shami was out, Jasprit Bumrah took charge of the Indian pace attack, supported by Mohammed Siraj and Akash Deep. The recent third Test in Brisbane ended in a draw due to rain, and afterward, India’s captain Rohit Sharma shared some news about Shami’s comeback.
Rohit Sharma shared the latest news about Mohammed Shami coming back.
"Regarding Shami, I really think it's about time someone from the NCA gives us an update on his rehab situation," he mentioned.
"Those guys need to step up and fill us in on what's going on.
"I get that he's been playing a lot of cricket back home, but there have been some concerns about his knee too. The last thing we want is for him to come here and then have to pull out mid-game. We all know how that goes.
"We definitely don’t want to take any risks unless we’re completely sure—like 200% sure—that he’s good to go. But like I said in the last press conference, if the NCA thinks he’s ready to recover and play, we’d be more than happy to have him back," he added.
Shami was supposed to be back for the home Tests against Bangladesh and New Zealand, but his ongoing knee issues during rehab have pushed things back.
