India's cricket stars Rohit Sharma, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, and Rishabh Pant had a rough time in their returns to the Ranji Trophy. Rohit, the captain, was out for just 3 runs off 19 balls, Jaiswal scored a mere 5 off 8, Gill followed with 4 off 8, and Pant only managed 1 off 10 in the sixth round of the tournament.

Making his first Ranji Trophy appearance in almost ten years, Rohit looked completely out of his element during the Mumbai vs Jammu and Kashmir match at the BKC ground in Mumbai. The explosive batsman we once knew seemed to be missing in action. J&K bowlers Auqib Nabi and Umar Nazir really put him under pressure after Mumbai's captain Ajinkya Rahane chose to bat first on Thursday morning.

Rohit got off the mark with a single in the first over but then struggled to find his rhythm against Nazir, who consistently challenged him with his precise bowling. One delivery even bounced awkwardly and hit Rohit on the arm. Trying to break Nazir's flow, Rohit attempted to step down the pitch, but it didn’t change much.

In the sixth over's penultimate ball, Nazir bowled one that was short and wide. Rohit, reminiscent of his approach against Pat Cummins in the Melbourne Test, lifted his front leg to play a pull shot. Unfortunately, just like in that match, the ball got on him too quickly, and he ended up skying it to mid-off..

Jaiswal and Gill let us down too

Before Rohit was out, Nabi sent Jaiswal back to the pavilion. The top wicket-taker from J&K this season bowled one that came back sharply from a good length, catching Jaiswal right in front of the stumps. The left-handed batsman, who started off with a beautiful square cut on his second ball, missed the chance to counter the delivery by not stepping forward enough.

In the Karnataka vs Punjab game at Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, Shubman Gill, batting at No. 3, had a rough return to the Ranji Trophy after more than two and a half years. Gill, who last played for Punjab in July 2022, managed to score just 4 runs.

Meanwhile, Rishabh Pant had a tough outing as well, getting out for just 1 run off 10 balls in Delhi's match against Saurashtra in Rajkot.
