Rohit Sharma’s Test Captaincy Future Hangs in Balance as Gautam Gambhir’s Opinion Holds Significant Weight

India's victory in the ICC Men's Champions Trophy 2025 could pave the way for Rohit Sharma to keep his role as Test captain for the upcoming five-match series against England in June and July. He struggled during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, to the point where he stepped down from the last Test in Sydney.
On the flip side, Rohit has bounced back in the white-ball formats, guiding India to their second ICC title in just eight months. The team had an almost flawless run in the eight-team tournament, finishing unbeaten to claim the championship.
Under Rohit's leadership, India faced six losses in their last eight Tests, including a disappointing 0-3 home defeat to New Zealand. This marked the first time India did not reach the finals of the World Test Championship (WTC).
Despite this, a report from PTI indicates that Rohit is still the Test captain, as he chose to sit out the last Test in Sydney.
"Technically, Rohit is still the Test captain. He made the decision to bench himself for the last Test in Sydney, stating that a team can't succeed with multiple out-of-form players," a BCCI source told PTI.
"Since the Australia Tests, India hasn't played any Tests, so there hasn't been any change in the Test captaincy. Plus, Rohit never indicated that he doesn't want to play Tests," the source added.
Last call will be made later
The PTI report mentioned that the final decision will be made later, with head coach Gautam Gambhir's opinion being crucial in choosing the captain for the longest format.
According to a source, "The selection committee takes a break during the IPL. Since all the matches are broadcasted, they don’t always need to travel unless they have a specific strategy in mind or want to closely observe a particular player."
The source continued, "Once the IPL kicks off, they'll start planning for the England series. But Gautam Gambhir's perspective will be very influential."
After stepping down from the Sydney Test against Australia, Rohit Sharma made it clear that he isn't retiring and has no plans to leave. Even after winning the Champions Trophy, he reiterated that he’s not stepping away from ODI cricket.
"Just to clarify, I’m not retiring from this format. I want to prevent any rumors from spreading in the future. Thanks a lot," Rohit stated after the Champions Trophy victory.
