Rohit Sharma's Struggles Prompt Gavaskar to Recommend Exercise Routine Before Innings

Indian cricket icon Sunil Gavaskar has commented on Rohit Sharma's persistent difficulties with his footwork, recommending that the Indian captain should implement a more concentrated warm-up routine prior to taking the field. Rohit has struggled significantly in Test cricket in recent months, and once again failed to make a notable contribution with the bat on Day 2.
He was dismissed for a mere 6 runs, following a lacklustre performance in the first innings where he managed only 3 runs. His return to the No. 6 position has not yielded positive results, as evidenced by two disappointing outings, which have placed India's batting lineup in a vulnerable state.
In the first innings, Scott Boland successfully trapped him in the crease, while in the second, Pat Cummins replicated this feat, leading to another early dismissal. A particularly concerning moment arose when Mitchell Starc had Rohit in front of the stumps, but the Indian captain was fortunate to escape, as Starc's delivery was subsequently deemed a no-ball.
Nevertheless, Rohit's recurring footwork issues against the Australian bowlers are increasingly becoming a matter of concern.
'Needs to do exercise'
Gavaskar provided his perspective on the challenges Rohit is facing with his foot movement.
"It appears that his feet are not moving as they ought to. He should engage in some exercises prior to stepping onto the crease to enhance circulation in his legs," remarked the esteemed cricketer.
Gavaskar further noted that the Indian captain has historically been a slow starter regarding his footwork, and this tendency seems to be becoming more evident as he ages. “He has consistently been a slow starter in terms of foot movement. This is not merely a recent development. As one age, this issue tends to become more pronounced,” Gavaskar stated.
His recommendation was straightforward: Rohit should focus on a more effective warm-up routine before batting. “When he approaches the crease, perhaps he should run a bit to ensure proper circulation. Engaging in some light jogging before facing the first ball could be beneficial,” he suggested.
Currently, India is in a challenging situation, with the scoreboard reflecting 128/5 at the conclusion of Day 2. Rishabh Pant and Nitish Reddy are at the crease, but they face a significant challenge, as the team still trails Australia by 29 runs.
