Rohit Sharma's Retirement Strategy After the Champions Trophy Suggested by Former IPL Captain: 'I Don't Envision Him Continuing...'

Rohit Sharmas T20I career concluded on a high note; however, his performance in other formats, especially Test cricket, has not mirrored this success. The 37-year-old captain of India faced a challenging 2024/25 season, resulting in his team failing to qualify for the World Test Championship Final for the first time, despite being considered favorites at the season's outset. Adam Gilchrist, the renowned Australian wicketkeeper, has suggested that Rohit may retire following the 2025 Champions Trophy.
India's upcoming Test series consists of the five-match Pataudi Trophy in England, which will mark the beginning of their new World Test Championship cycle in June and July. Gilchrist, who previously captained Rohit during their time with the Deccan Chargers in the IPL, expressed skepticism about Rohit's participation in the tour. "I don't envision Rohit traveling to England. He mentioned he would evaluate his situation upon returning home. The first thing he will encounter is a two-month-old baby requiring his attention. This might motivate him to go to England, but I doubt he will pursue it," Gilchrist remarked on the Club Prairie Fire podcast.
India's Champions Trophy journey is set to commence on February 20 with a match against Bangladesh, culminating in the final on March 9. "I believe he will likely make an attempt at the Champions Trophy, and that could potentially mark the end of his career," Gilchrist added.
Test abyss for Rohit after T20 World Cup glory
Rohit chose to withdraw from the fifth Test against Australia during the recently concluded Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Throughout the 2024/25 season, he participated in eight Tests, managing to accumulate only 164 runs at a notably low average of 10.93. In the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, his performance was particularly disappointing, as he scored merely 31 runs across five innings during the tour, resulting in an average of just 6.2, marking the lowest average ever recorded by a touring captain in Australia. This decline in form followed a year in which Rohit's batting was celebrated, having led India to victory in the 2024 T20 World Cup.
In light of his poor performance, Rohit opted to "sit out" the series decider in Sydney, leading to speculation regarding whether he had played his final Test match. However, he promptly addressed these rumors, stating to Star Sports on Day 2 of the Sydney Test, “I am not going anywhere.”
