Shubman Gill once again demonstrated his exceptional talent, leading India to a convincing six-wicket victory over Bangladesh with a remarkable, unbeaten 101 in their Champions Trophy opener held in Dubai. On a challenging pitch where many batsmen faced difficulties, Gill's poise and elegant strokeplay distinguished him as he anchored India's pursuit of 229 runs, finishing the match with 21 balls to spare.

Entering the tournament following an outstanding series against England, Gill maintained his impressive form by achieving his eighth ODI century, marking his first in an ICC event. Despite facing early challenges during the chase, he remained composed, forming a vital 87-run partnership with KL Rahul (41*), which was instrumental in securing India's win.

After the match, Indian captain Rohit Sharma greeted Gill in a manner reminiscent of Gill's own signature celebration. Typically, Gill bows towards the dressing room upon reaching a century, and on this occasion, Rohit mirrored that gesture as he approached Gill on the field.

Following India's impressive victory, Gill described his innings against Bangladesh as one of his "most satisfying" performances.

"Certainly one of the most gratifying innings I have played, and my first century in ICC events," remarked Gill, who was awarded Player of the Match. "I am very pleased with my performance."

India's chase commenced strongly, with Rohit Sharma and Gill consistently finding the boundary. Rohit, who surpassed 11,000 ODI runs during his innings of 41, was dismissed by Taskin Ahmed, bringing Virat Kohli to the crease. The crowd erupted in excitement, but Kohli could only manage 22 runs before being dismissed by leg-spinner Rishad Hossain.

India encountered a few hiccups as Rishad and Mustafizur Rahman took wickets in quick succession, leaving the team at 144-4. Nevertheless, Gill remained steadfast.

His skill in rotating the strike and locating gaps in the field ensured that there were no further complications. Rahul, who received an early lifeline from Jaker Ali, capitalized on the opportunity as India completed a thorough chase.

India is set to resume its campaign on Sunday, facing off against their long-standing rivals, Pakistan. The latter team suffered a 60-run loss in their initial match against New Zealand. This encounter in Dubai is crucial for Mohammad Rizwan's squad, as their prospects of advancing to the semi-finals are precariously low, particularly in light of Fakhar Zaman's recent injury.
