Rohit Sharma's International Cricket Timeline: Focus on Champions Trophy, Dismisses England Tests

Rohit Sharma's International Cricket Timeline: Focus on Champions Trophy, Dismisses England Tests

3 months ago | 5 Views

India's captain Rohit Sharma has faced significant criticism not only for his leadership but also for his underwhelming performance in the recently concluded Border-Gavaskar Trophy series in Australia. This has ignited discussions regarding his future in the format, especially with the team no longer in contention for a spot in the World Test Championship. Despite Rohit dismissing retirement speculation during the Sydney Test, a report from Dainik Jagran suggests that the 37-year-old may not extend his international career beyond the upcoming Champions Trophy.

When Rohit "opted out" of the series finale in Australia earlier this month, there were rumours that he had played his last Test match in Melbourne. However, on Day 2 of the match, he addressed these rumours in an interview with Star Sports, stating, "I'm not going anywhere," effectively quelling retirement discussions.

Nevertheless, the topic was revisited by BCCI officials during a review meeting in Mumbai on Saturday. While the board is not expected to make any hasty decisions before the Champions Trophy, which is set to commence next month, a report from Hindustan Times indicated that Rohit's reassurances did not resonate with BCCI officials, as selectors remain concerned about his recent performance.

In the last three series, Rohit managed to score only 164 runs at an average of just over 10, with a single half-century to his name. During the tour of Australia, he accumulated a mere 31 runs, resulting in a dismal average of 6.2, marking the lowest recorded by a touring captain in Australia.

Rohit Sharma unlikely to travel to England for Test series

A report published in Dainik Jagran on Monday indicates that Rohit Sharma is expected to conclude his international cricket career during the Champions Trophy. Following this ICC tournament, the Indian team is scheduled to tour England for a series of five Test matches, marking the beginning of the new World Test Championship cycle. The report suggests that the likelihood of Rohit participating in the England tour is quite low.

Additionally, former Australian cricketer Adam Gilchrist expressed a similar sentiment during the latest episode of the Club Prairie Fire podcast.

“I don’t foresee Rohit travelling to England. He mentioned that he would evaluate his situation upon returning home. However, upon his return, he will be greeted by a two-month-old baby, which will require his attention. This might motivate him to consider the England tour, but I doubt he will pursue it," he stated.

“I believe he will likely focus on the Champions Trophy, and that could potentially mark the end of his career," he concluded.
