Rohit Sharma’s IPL Numbers: A Career of Consistency but Few Standout Seasons

Rohit Sharma’s IPL Numbers: A Career of Consistency but Few Standout Seasons

10 days ago | 5 Views

Rohit Sharma is one of the few players who has been part of the Indian Premier League (IPL) since it first started. Throughout the 18 seasons of this lucrative T20 tournament, he has crossed the 400-run mark only eight times. His standout performance was during the Mumbai Indians' championship run in 2013, where he accumulated 538 runs with an average of 38.42 and a strike rate of 131.54.

Unfortunately, Rohit has had a rough start in the current 18th season of the IPL, managing only eight runs in his first two games. In the opening match against the five-time champions, Chennai Super Kings, he was dismissed for a duck by left-arm pacer Khaleel Ahmed.

In the following game against the Gujarat Titans, Rohit showed some aggression by hitting two boundaries off the first three balls he faced from Mohammed Siraj. However, Siraj quickly responded, bowling a sharp delivery that knocked over Rohit's stumps.

Looking at Rohit's performance over the last five seasons, his slow start in IPL 2025 isn't surprising. He has only surpassed the 400-run mark once in that span, which was last season when the Mumbai Indians finished at the bottom of the table.

In those five seasons, his runs tally includes 332 (2020), 381 (2021), 268 (2022), 332 (2023), and 417 (2024). His numbers in IPL 2024 would have been even less impressive if he hadn't scored a century against Chennai Super Kings at the Wankhede Stadium.

Rohit's inconsistent performance with the bat in international cricket

Rohit has had a bit of a rollercoaster ride with the bat since last year's Test series against New Zealand at home. In the longest format, he hasn't quite looked like his usual self. This slump in form even led him to sit out the last Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia in Sydney.

On a brighter note, the Indian captain found his groove again by scoring a century in the second ODI of the three-match series against England. He also provided solid starts for the team during the Champions Trophy matches. In the final against New Zealand, Rohit managed to score 76 runs on a challenging pitch in Dubai, which played a key role in securing the tournament win for his side.

The Mumbai Indians, who have clinched the IPL title five times, are in dire need of their opening batsman to regain his form to turn their fortunes around. The team has been struggling to get off to a strong start, which has contributed to their lack of victories.

After a defeat against the Gujarat Titans, MI captain Hardik Pandya urged his batters to step up and take more responsibility. In an interview with the host broadcaster, Hardik mentioned, "Right now, we all need to own up. It’s still early in the season. The batters need to deliver; hopefully, they will soon."

Will Rohit Sharma bounce back and reclaim his former glory? Only time will reveal that. The Mumbai Indians are set to face the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the Wankhede Stadium, and 'Mumbai Cha Raja' might just need the support of his home ground to show what he’s capable of.
