Rohit Sharma's Gloves Spark Retirement Speculations After Gabba Dismissal

India's captain Rohit Sharma's struggles in Test cricket persisted as he was dismissed by Pat Cummins during the opening half hour of Day 4 in the third Test match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series in Brisbane. Rohit scored a mere 10 runs off 27 balls, contributing to India's disappointing batting performance in the match. However, his actions following the dismissal led to speculation about his potential retirement among fans.

Batting at the No. 6 position for the third consecutive innings in this series, Rohit appeared relatively at ease at the crease, demonstrating patience as he awaited the right ball to play his shots. Unfortunately, the 37-year-old fell victim to a familiar issue—his lack of foot movement. Cummins delivered a fuller ball near the off stump, prompting Rohit to reach for it with a hard poke, which was easily collected by wicketkeeper Alex Carey.

As Rohit walked back to the pavilion, visibly disappointed, he left his gloves in front of the dugout, just behind the advertisement board. This moment was captured and circulated on social media, igniting a wave of speculation among fans regarding a possible indication of his retirement from Test cricket. Earlier, the veteran batsman had announced his retirement from T20I cricket after leading the team to victory in the T20 World Cup in June. There are also rumours suggesting that Rohit may consider stepping away from the ODI format following the Champions Trophy scheduled for February next year, where India is expected to play its matches in Dubai, while the remainder of the tournament will take place in Pakistan.

Rohit Sharma's recent lack of form

Rohit commenced the calendar year with remarkable success, achieving two centuries during a home Test series against England. However, since the onset of India's extensive Test schedule in September, he has managed to accumulate only 152 runs across 13 innings, including just one half-century. His performance in the home series against Bangladesh and New Zealand was among his least impressive, and he followed this with a mere 19 runs in three innings during the tour of Australia, where he was relegated to the No. 6 position to accommodate the in-form KL Rahul as an opener.

Should Rohit be unable to demonstrate a resurgence in the remaining two Test matches of the series, the selectors may be compelled to reconsider their options as India prepares for the next World Test Championship cycle commencing in July.
