Rohit Sharma's Form a Concern for MI Despite Win Over DC: ‘Things Need to Change’
5 days ago | 5 Views
Mumbai Indians made a comeback on Sunday, securing a tense 12-run victory over Delhi Capitals at Arun Jaitley Stadium. However, former Indian opener Aakash Chopra believes there are still areas that require improvement. The five-time champions have managed to win only two out of their first six matches, but the outcome of Sunday’s game provided significant relief for captain Hardik Pandya. Despite the win, the performance was not flawless; at one point, Delhi Capitals appeared to be in control of the chase, leading to concerns that Mumbai Indians might fall short. Nevertheless, the bowlers managed to regain control in the latter part of the innings, shifting the momentum.
Chopra noted that MI did not take full advantage of their strong start, as they failed to accelerate in the second innings to push their total closer to 230 runs.
"While Mumbai secured the victory, the reality is that they were approximately 25 runs short. They were at 59/1 after six overs but maintained a scoring rate of only 10 runs per over without being all out until the end. Will Jacks faced just one delivery. This indicates that they did not fully utilize their 20 overs. Although everyone batted decently, I believe they fell short," he remarked in a video posted on his YouTube channel, 'Aakash Chopra'.
“It won't work out if Rohit doesn't score runs"
The performance of opener Rohit Sharma has raised significant concerns for the Mumbai Indians (MI) as he continues to struggle with his batting. In the recent match against Delhi Capitals, he managed to score only 18 runs before being dismissed during the powerplay. This season, he has yet to surpass the 20-run threshold, accumulating a mere 56 runs over five matches, resulting in a disappointing average of 11.20.
Chopra emphasized that MI's batting struggles will persist if Rohit does not regain his form.
"If you score 100 runs in the first 10 overs, you should aim for a total close to 225 or 250, given your potential. Rohit's lack of runs has become a concerning issue. Mumbai needs to address this. Naman Dhir, who is arguably the best performer in the team, has had limited opportunities to bat. If Rohit doesn't start scoring, the team will face challenges. Changes are necessary, as I believe they have not met their potential," Chopra remarked.
