Rohit Sharma's Dropped Catch and Reaction: Gavaskar Says It Will Be Long Remembered

Rohit Sharma did everything he could to shake off that dropped catch. He slammed his hands on the ground in frustration, apologized to bowler Axar Patel with his hands together, and berated himself for at least the next couple of overs. The commentators even joked about whether there were any penalties in the ICC code of conduct for self-criticism. Dropping a catch isn’t exactly rare in international cricket, so why was Rohit reacting so dramatically? It was no ordinary drop; it cost Axar Patel a chance at a hat-trick.

This would have been Axar's first hat-trick in any format, including domestic games. Only four Indian bowlers—Chetan Sharma, Kapil Dev, Kuldeep Yadav (twice), and Mohammed Shami—have achieved a hat-trick in ODIs. In fact, only once has a bowler taken a hat-trick in the ICC Champions Trophy, with Jerome Taylor of the West Indies doing it back in 2006. That’s how special it is to snag three wickets in a row.

Axar was so close. He had outsmarted Bangladesh's Jaker Ali, who was drawn forward, and just when he thought he had it under control, the ball spun and caught the edge. Rohit, anticipating a similar play, set up two slips. The setup was spot on, and Axar's delivery was perfect, but Rohit misjudged it. Instead of letting the ball come to him, he lunged for it, and the outcome was clear: the ball hit the ground, and so did Rohit’s hopes.

Legendary Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar, who was commentating during the incident, remarked that a dropped catch on a hat-trick ball will stick in people's minds for a while. "Mistakes happen, but missing a catch on a hat-trick ball is something that won't be forgotten easily," he noted.

Rohit was clearly upset. He was really mad at himself, shaking his head so much that it made the viewers a bit dizzy too. He kept yelling at himself, and Gavaskar pointed out, "He's really letting himself have it. He's not happy at all."

Jaker and Hridoy are making India foot the bill

Rohit and India really took a hit when he missed that catch, especially since Bangladesh was struggling at 35/6. Instead, Jaker Ali and Towhid Hridoy teamed up for a massive 154-run partnership, turning the game around and putting a decent score on the board.

As the match went on, India's fielding took a nosedive. It started off well with some solid catches from Virat Kohli and Shubman Gill, but everything changed after Rohit's drop. Hardik Pandya also let a straightforward catch slip through his fingers off Kuldeep Yadav's bowling, giving Hridoy another chance. Then, Ravindra Jadeja managed to outsmart Jaker Ali, but KL Rahul couldn't cleanly gather the ball for a stumping opportunity.

The ground fielding was pretty lackluster too. They let a few boundaries slip towards the end, which helped Bangladesh reach 228 in 49.4 overs.
