Rohit Sharma's Decision Backfires: India Loses Review After Ignoring KL Rahul's Advice
16 days ago | 5 Views
India's captain Rohit Sharma chose to review a delivery from Ravindra Jadeja, even though KL Rahul advised against it during the ICC Men's Champions Trophy 2025 final against New Zealand at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. As it turned out, Rahul was right, as the replays confirmed the ball was clearly going over the stumps.
In the 22nd over, Jadeja bowled a perfect delivery that turned into Tom Latham, hitting him on the back thigh. Both Jadeja and Rahul appealed, but the on-field umpire didn't give it out. Rohit rushed in to discuss the review, but Rahul seemed unsure, suggesting the ball had struck Latham high on the pad and might have gone over the stumps.
Despite Rahul's hesitation, Jadeja convinced Rohit to go for the DRS. Unfortunately, the replays showed the ball sailing over the stumps, leading to India losing a review.
Commentators Ravi Shastri and Dinesh Karthik noted that Rahul had a good sense of the situation and that Rohit should have trusted his wicketkeeper's judgment. Karthik remarked, "KL Rahul is usually spot on with DRS calls. But Rohit chose to side with the bowler this time." Shastri added, "Rahul likely signaled that the ball was going high. He has a great view of the pitch."
Jadeja quickly got Latham out after that
Ravindra Jadeja struck again in his next over, sending Latham back to the pavilion. On the second ball of the 24th over, Latham attempted a sweep shot but misjudged the ball's path and got hit right on the pads.
The umpire didn’t hesitate to raise his finger, and Latham made his way back after scoring 14 runs off 30 balls, marking the Kiwis' fourth wicket down.
Earlier, New Zealand's captain Mitchell Santner won the toss and chose to bat first, with Nathan Smith stepping in for Matt Henry in the lineup.
Meanwhile, India kept their squad unchanged from the semi-final against Australia, which they won by four wickets.
This marks the second time in five years that New Zealand and India are facing off in the final of an ICC event, having previously met in the 2021 World Test Championship final.
