Rohit Sharma's Comeback: Training with Mumbai Ranji Squad Alongside Ajinkya Rahane

India's captain Rohit Sharma attended a training session at Wankhede Stadium on Tuesday, joining the Mumbai Ranji Trophy team. This decision comes in response to the criticism aimed at Indian players for neglecting domestic cricket, which has contributed to a disappointing performance in Test matches since October, resulting in six losses out of eight games.

Social media captured visuals of Rohit upon his arrival at the Wankhede Stadium on Tuesday morning. The Indian Express later reported that he was actively participating in the training, batting alongside seasoned Indian player Ajinkya Rahane.

Earlier that day, Hindustan Times indicated that the 37-year-old had planned to join the practice session and had communicated his intentions to the Mumbai team management. However, it remains unconfirmed whether he will participate in Mumbai's forthcoming Ranji Trophy match against Jammu and Kashmir at the MCA Cricket Ground.

According to an MCA source quoted by Hindustan Times, "Rohit will train today with the Ranji Trophy team. The entire lineup will be present, including Ajinkya Rahane, Shardul Thakur, and Shreyas Iyer." The source further noted, "Rohit has not yet informed us about his availability for the Ranji match on January 23. He will confirm due course."

Currently, Mumbai holds the third position in Group A of the Ranji Trophy, trailing behind Baroda and Jammu and Kashmir, with three victories in five matches thus far.

How did Rohit perform during the tour of Australia?

The captain of India experienced a dismal performance during the campaign in Australia, managing to accumulate only 31 runs across five innings at an average of 6.2. Consequently, he opted to withdraw from the series finale in Sydney due to his ongoing struggles with form since September, during which he recorded a mere 164 runs in eight matches at an average of 10.93.

The performances of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli during the home series against New Zealand and the Australian tour have ignited significant debate among analysts and experts regarding the necessity of prioritizing domestic cricket. Since his Test debut in 2012, Kohli has participated in only one Ranji Trophy match, while Rohit Sharma has not played in this format for nine years.

Following the Sydney Test, India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir expressed his desire for all players to participate in domestic cricket.

“I would always like everyone to play domestic cricket. That is how much importance domestic cricket needs to be given,” he stated. “Not only one game, but if they are available and have the commitment to play red-ball cricket, everyone should play domestic cricket.

“It’s as simple as it can get. If you don’t give importance to domestic cricket, you will never get the desired players that you want in Test cricket.”
