Rohit Sharma's Century: A Roaring Reply to Critics Before Champions Trophy
1 month ago | 5 Views
India expressed relief on Sunday as captain Rohit Sharma made a triumphant return to form, just under two weeks before the commencement of the Champions Trophy. The 37-year-old achieved his 32nd career century during a record-setting performance at the Barabati Stadium in Cuttack, contributing to India's second consecutive victory in the three-match series against England, thereby securing an unassailable 2-0 lead. Following this remarkable innings and the team's success, Rohit addressed his critics.
His struggles in the red-ball format since September, which included a disappointing appearance in the Ranji Trophy last month, had raised significant concerns regarding his future in cricket. Many speculated that the forthcoming Champions Trophy might mark his final international appearance, especially given the uncertainty surrounding his selection for the summer Test series in England. Criticism intensified after a lacklustre performance in the ODI match in Nagpur against England. Nevertheless, Rohit silenced the doubters with a stellar innings of 119 runs off 90 balls in Cuttack, reaffirming that he still has much to offer.
In a video shared by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Rohit urged for trust and confidence in a veteran player who has dedicated many years to the sport. He emphasized that a few setbacks would not alter his batting approach and that overcoming challenges requires a mindset focused on scoring runs.
When individuals have participated in a sport for several years and accumulated a significant number of runs, it holds considerable significance. I have engaged in this game for an extensive period and comprehended the expectations placed upon me. It was simply a matter of executing my responsibilities, and I fulfilled mine. What I accomplished today was part of my routine. In my perspective, it revolved around performing the actions I typically undertake, batting in my characteristic manner, he stated.
Having been in this environment for a substantial duration, a couple of performances will not alter my approach or batting style. It was merely another day at work. As long as I can retire for the night knowing that I have given my utmost effort, that is what truly matters. It is essential to return to the mindset of scoring runs. While it is a challenging endeavour, articulating it is far simpler. In my view, it was about finding enjoyment in the process.
Rohit surpasses Sachin Tendulkar with Cuttack performance
A notable highlight of the innings on Sunday was Rohit's achievement in surpassing the iconic Sachin Tendulkar, thereby becoming the second-highest run-scorer for India as an opener in international cricket. Over the course of 343 matches, he has amassed 15,404 runs at an average of 45.43, including 44 centuries and 79 half-centuries, with a personal best of 264. In contrast, Sachin has recorded 15,335 runs at an average of 48.07 across 346 matches and 342 innings. Virender Sehwag continues to lead the list with 15,758 runs in 321 matches.
The four-wicket victory in Cuttack marked Rohit's 36th win as captain in One Day Internationals. He is now tied with the legendary Viv Richards for the third-highest number of wins as captain in this format. Clive Lloyd, Ricky Ponting, and Virat Kohli share the top position, each with 39 ODI victories as captain.
