Rohit Sharma’s Captaincy Fate Sealed? Agarkar to Drop Major Hint on England Squad During IPL’s Final Week
3 days ago | 5 Views
The long-awaited fate of Rohit Sharma's Test future has been decided by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The 37-year-old is set to travel to England for the tour in June and will continue his role as captain. India, aiming to win the first away series at the Old Blighty since 2007, will play five Test matches against England starting June 20 in Headingley.
According to a report in the PTI, Rohit is expected to lead the India senior team in England despite his modest outings and two Test series defeats against New Zealand and Australia.
The 37-year-old's future in the Indian team came under the scanner after he managed just 164 runs in the 10 Test matches he played between September 2024 and January 2025. It included his forgettable tour of Australia, where he managed just 31 runs at 6.2, the worst-ever average for a touring captain Down Under. He also incurred a failed return to the Ranji Trophy in January, capping off his worst run in red-ball cricket.
The report further said that India will also keenly track the fitness of star pacer Jasprit Bumrah, who is still recovering from a back injury he sustained during the tour to Australia. The star fast bowler is not available for the Mumbai Indians' first few matches of the IPL 2025.
Agarkar to drop hint on squad in final week of IPL 2025
The selection committee of the BCCI is poised to provide significant insights regarding the Indian team for the upcoming tour of England during the final week of the current IPL 2025 season. According to reports, Ajit Agarkar and his team will finalize the India A squad for two four-day matches against the Lions, scheduled to take place prior to the commencement of the senior team's series. This squad is expected to include several key players from India as part of the BCCI's strategy to prepare them for the series against Ben Stokes' team.
"There is ample time to announce the squad, likely before or immediately after the knockout matches. By that time, you will have a clearer understanding of which players are available," a source familiar with the situation informed PTI, requesting anonymity.
The IPL 2025 playoffs are set to occur on May 20, 21, and 23, culminating in the final on May 25.
