Rohit Sharma's Availability for Ranji Trophy Under Review by Mumbai Selectors
3 months ago | 5 Views
Team India captain Rohit Sharma has not yet confirmed his participation in the upcoming Ranji Trophy match against Jammu and Kashmir. However, the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) has decided to take proactive measures by reaching out to him regarding selection. Rohit has faced significant scrutiny due to his underwhelming performance in the recent Test series against New Zealand and Australia, which has placed him under considerable pressure. Following a series of disappointing scores, he opted to withdraw from India's playing XI for the final Test against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
At 37 years of age, Rohit is eager to reverse his recent batting struggles, having accumulated only 31 runs across three Tests against Australia. While he has yet to confirm his availability for the Ranji match commencing on January 23, no formal discussions have occurred thus far. Nonetheless, an MCA official has indicated that the board intends to approach Rohit before the squad announcement.
"The selectors are anticipated to announce the squad on January 20, during which they will adhere to the standard procedure of verifying the availability of each player. Rohit will also be contacted around that time for selection," stated an MCA official to PTI.
Upon returning from Australia, the Indian captain has already begun preparations. He practised alongside Mumbai captain Ajinkya Rahane on Tuesday at the Wankhede Stadium and is expected to engage in comprehensive training within the next couple of days.
In light of India's 1-3 series defeat to Australia, head coach Gautam Gambhir has encouraged his players to participate in domestic cricket to demonstrate their commitment to the red-ball format.
"I strongly advocate for all players to engage in domestic cricket. This reflects the significance that domestic cricket holds. It is not merely about one match; if players are available and committed to red-ball cricket, they should participate in domestic competitions. It is as straightforward as that. Neglecting domestic cricket will hinder the development of the players we seek," Gambhir remarked.
Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant available for Ranji matches
Young Indian cricketers Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, and Rishabh Pant have confirmed their availability for the upcoming Ranji matches.
Following a commendable performance in Australia, Jaiswal has opted to participate in the Ranji Trophy match against Jammu and Kashmir.
Shubman, who accumulated 93 runs over five innings during the Australian tour, is set to compete in Punjab's forthcoming match against Karnataka in Bengaluru.
Pant, known for his natural aggression that sometimes veered into recklessness during the Australian series, will be featured in Delhi's next match against Saurashtra. Notably, the dynamic wicketkeeper-batter has not participated in a Ranji Trophy match since the 2017-2018 season.
