Rohit Sharma may currently be experiencing a dip in form, yet he undeniably remains one of the prominent figures in cricket. The Indian captain made his return to the one-day format on Thursday during the first ODI of the series against England in Nagpur, generating significant excitement as he approached the crease for India's run-chase.

After the Indian team successfully bowled England out for 248 runs, Rohit emerged from the dressing room in his batting attire, eliciting a rousing ovation from the fans in Nagpur. Former England captain Kevin Pietersen remarked on the crowd's enthusiasm, elaborating on the deep emotional connection fans have with their star players.

“Honestly, it's unbelievable. When Rohit Sharma steps out of the dressing room, the crowd goes wild. It's astonishing how significant these stars are. This is why I emphasize the importance of appreciating these players while they are still active. Just observe the emotions throughout the stadium when someone like Rohit Sharma descends those steps,” Pietersen stated.

The former England great also noted that the members of the English team instinctively turned to look at Rohit, captivated by the crowd's reaction, which underscored the “intimidating” presence of the Indian captain.

“Let me share something. When Rohit Sharma walked down, we captured visuals of the England dressing room. As the crowd erupted, the entire English team began to gaze at him. That’s intimidating, that’s an aura, and that’s something he has cultivated—not merely because he is Rohit Sharma, but due to the runs he has accumulated and his impressive average,” Pietersen added.

Unfortunately, Rohit was unable to meet the expectations in the first ODI, as he was dismissed for just 2 runs during the run-chase. Nevertheless, his dismissal did not adversely affect India, as Shubman Gill, Shreyas Iyer, and Axar Patel delivered strong performances with half-centuries, leading the hosts to a four-wicket victory.

Preparations for Champions Trophy

India's series against England signified the team's re-entry into the format after a five-month hiatus. Following this series, India is scheduled to compete in two additional ODIs against England before heading to Dubai for the Champions Trophy, where they will commence their campaign against Bangladesh on February 20.
