Rohit Sharma's 4-Ball Duck Sparks Fury from India’s World Cup Legend

Rohit Sharma, the dynamic opener for the Mumbai Indians, has been advised to reconsider his batting strategy from the T20 World Cup and Champions Trophy during the current IPL season. In the season opener against the Chennai Super Kings, Rohit had a disappointing performance, scoring a four-ball duck. The 37-year-old, who has recently adopted an aggressive batting style for the national team, attempted to replicate this approach for MI, but it did not yield positive results on Sunday.

Rohit's performance in recent IPL seasons has not met his usual standards, with his last season exceeding 450 runs occurring back in 2016. Last year, he accumulated 417 runs at an average of 32.08, with only two scores surpassing fifty.

Krishnamachari Srikkanth, a star from the 1983 World Cup-winning team, suggested that Rohit should focus on playing a few balls safely before unleashing his aggressive shots.

“He tends to go for big shots during the T20 World Cup and Champions Trophy. I believe he should first settle in by playing a few balls. Once he finds his rhythm, he can then go for the big shots. It’s important to get your timing right before attempting aggressive plays,” Srikkanth remarked on Star Sports.

Rohit must regain his form quickly, as the Mumbai Indians rely on their openers to perform effectively this season, especially after their inconsistent showing last year, which led them to finish at the bottom of the points table.

Veteran Australian all-rounder Shane Watson echoed this advice, emphasizing the importance of assessing the pitch before attempting aggressive shots. On Sunday at Chepauk, Rohit’s eagerness to attack resulted in his dismissal without scoring.

Watson commented on Star Sports, stating, "Particularly on a pitch where the ball's behavior is uncertain, especially given its drier condition, it typically takes a few deliveries—at least six—to truly gauge the ball's movement and whether it is swinging. Unfortunately for Rohit, he ended up hitting the leading edge of his bat, which hindered his ability to build his innings."

Rohit Sharma continues to struggle against left-arm pacers

Watson also highlighted Rohit Sharma's ongoing difficulties against left-arm fast bowlers, noting that Khaleel's in-swinger proved challenging for him. The former CSK player emphasized the importance of Rohit clearing his mind before deciding to attack the bowlers.

"There is no doubt that left-arm swing bowling has been a challenge for him in the past. However, when Rohit is performing at his peak, he exhibits aggressive intent. He doesn't merely wait for the ball to swing; instead, he applies pressure on the bowler. In tonight's match, it was evident that he was caught in two minds, unsure whether to confront the bowler or to play conservatively through the first over. He needs to find that equilibrium," he remarked.
