There were plenty of hints during India's first practice session at the Gabba in Brisbane on Thursday that captain Rohit Sharma is set to keep batting at No.6, with KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal likely to open in the third Test starting Saturday (December 14). After arriving in Australia ahead of the second Test in Adelaide, Rohit made the bold choice to step down from his opening role to No.6, allowing Rahul to take the top spot following his impressive performance in the first match.
Unfortunately, this strategy didn’t pay off, as neither Rahul nor Rohit found success in their new spots. Rahul showed promise in the first innings but was out for 37, and in the second, he fell to a bouncer from Pat Cummins for just 7. Rohit, meanwhile, looked out of sorts at No.6. It was his first time batting in the middle order in six years, and he struggled with the moving pink ball. He was trapped lbw by Scott Boland for 3 in the first innings and was dismissed by Cummins for 6 shortly after.
Despite this, it seems India is likely to stick with the same batting order at the Gabba. Rahul and Jaiswal were the first to hit in Thursday's practice session. Rohit, however, got into the nets earlier than before, taking over from Rahul for a bit before Rahul returned for more practice.
Virat Kohli inspires with a talk as Jasprit Bumrah takes on a mentoring role.
India kicked off their training with an energetic pep talk from Virat Kohli. The former captain was really fired up as he spoke to the team. After that, he dove into a lengthy and focused batting session, which was pretty much par for the course for him during the tour. He also chatted with assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate, making sure he was on top of how he was responding to different types of deliveries, especially since he had fallen to similar ones in Perth and Adelaide.
Jasprit Bumrah took on a mentoring role, sharing tips with Nitish Kumar Reddy about how to shift his weight properly to add more speed to his bowling. While the all-rounder has been turning heads with his batting lower down the order, he really needs to step up his bowling game for India to find the right mix.
Mohammed Siraj, who made waves with his fiery exchange with Travis Head in Adelaide, spent a good chunk of time with India's video analyst Hari and bowling coach Morne Morkel, working on his release points to get more swing in his deliveries.
