India's captain Rohit Sharma took a hit to his left knee during a practice session on Sunday at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) as they gear up for the Boxing Day Test against Australia. While facing throwdowns from specialist Daya, the 37-year-old felt the impact but kept batting for a bit before opting to get some help from the team physio.
According to the Times of India, Rohit took off his gear when the physio arrived and had an ice pack applied to his knee. The physio then propped up his left leg on a chair to help him get comfortable and rest.
While the physio was working on him, Rohit appeared to be in noticeable pain, which could be a concerning sign for Team India.
There are just four days left until the Boxing Day Test, and the team is really hoping that Rohit's left knee injury isn't too bad so he can be ready for the fourth Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, which is currently tied at 1-1.
Sunday was India's second practice session leading up to the Boxing Day Test. Everyone showed up, and Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah were spotted experimenting with some new techniques.
Rohit Sharma is really eager to get his groove back
The Indian captain hasn't been performing well with the bat lately, and his last five Tests have been pretty disappointing.
Rohit Sharma missed the first match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Perth, which India won by a whopping 295 runs under Jasprit Bumrah's captaincy. He came back for the following two Tests in Adelaide and Brisbane, but struggled to find his rhythm with the bat, and his captaincy raised some eyebrows too.
In Adelaide, Rohit scored only 3 and 6 runs. Then, in the Gabba Test, he managed just 10 runs in the first innings.
Rohit Sharma currently holds the lowest first-innings average among Indian batters in Tests for the 2024-25 season. After the recent draw at the Gabba, he acknowledged that his recent performances haven't been great, but he remains confident in his skills.
"I know I haven't been batting well, and I'm okay with admitting that. But I understand my preparation and what I'm working on. I've checked all the necessary boxes. It's really about getting in as much time at the crease as I can," Rohit shared with reporters after the match.
"I'm feeling good about where I am. As long as my mind, body, and feet are in sync, I'm satisfied with how things are going. Sure, the stats might show that I haven't scored big runs in a while, but for me, it's more about my mental state and the preparation I do before each match. How I feel about myself is what truly matters," he added.
