Indian cricket captain Rohit Sharma has expressed his determination to bring the ICC Champions Trophy "back" to Wankhede Stadium, voicing confidence in his team's ability to deliver on the hopes of 140 crore Indian fans. Speaking at the 50th-anniversary celebration of the iconic Wankhede Stadium, Rohit addressed the crowd with a mix of optimism and resolve as the tournament trophy was unveiled during the ICC Trophy Tour.

Rohit stated:

“We will try our best. Representing the Indian team in any ICC tournament has always been a dream for me. Now, we are about to embark on a journey that carries the hopes of 140 crore people. I am confident that when we arrive in Dubai, the entire nation will be supporting us. We will give our best efforts to bring the trophy back to Wankhede.

Champions Trophy Journey:

The BCCI recently announced a 15-member squad for the tournament, with Rohit leading the team and Shubman Gill appointed vice-captain. India, placed alongside Australia, Pakistan, South Africa, and others, will play their games in Dubai as the tournament unfolds across Pakistan and the UAE.

India last won the Champions Trophy in 2013 under MS Dhoni's leadership, a triumph in which Rohit was a key contributor. The team now aims to end the 12-year title drought by replicating that success.

Challenges and Optimism:

India's recent form in international cricket has been inconsistent, marked by a home-series whitewash against New Zealand (0-3) and a 1-3 loss to Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. However, transitioning to the limited-overs format offers a fresh opportunity for redemption. With a blend of experienced players and emerging talent, Rohit’s squad is well-equipped to face the competition.

The Champions Trophy, featuring the top eight cricketing nations, is a stage for India to showcase its prowess and stake its claim as a dominant force in global cricket. With Rohit’s leadership and the unyielding support of fans, the team is poised to chase glory and aim for the trophy's return to Wankhede.

Wankhede celebrations

The Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai recently came alive with celebration during a grand event organized by the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA). The occasion marked the 50th anniversary of the iconic venue, and several cricketing legends were felicitated in honor of their contributions to Indian cricket.

Among the distinguished honorees were legendary players Sunil Gavaskar, Sanjay Manjrekar, Karsan Ghavri, Ajinkya Rahane, and Prithvi Shaw, whose performances have etched memorable chapters in the history of Indian cricket.

Adding a nostalgic touch to the celebrations, the MCA paid tribute to eight surviving members of the inaugural first-class match played at Wankhede Stadium. Their recognition not only celebrated their legacy but also served as a reminder of the venue's historic significance in Indian cricket.

The event reflected the pride and heritage associated with the Wankhede Stadium, which has witnessed countless iconic moments over the decades, from hosting legendary players to being the venue of India's 2011 World Cup triumph.
