India's captain Rohit Sharma commenced his Champions Trophy 2025 journey on a high note, delivering an impressive display of boundaries against Bangladesh during a Group A match at the Dubai International Stadium on Thursday. In achieving this feat, Rohit reached a significant milestone by amassing 11,000 runs in One Day Internationals (ODIs). He became the fourth Indian cricketer to attain this landmark, joining the ranks of cricketing legends Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, and Virat Kohli. Beyond these four distinguished Indians, only six other players globally have surpassed the 11,000 ODI runs mark, including Ricky Ponting, Jacques Kallis, Kumar Sangakkara, Sanath Jayasuriya, Inzamam-ul-Haq, and Mahela Jayawardene.
Additionally, Rohit has now claimed the title of the second fastest player in history to reach 11,000 ODI runs, surpassing the iconic Sachin Tendulkar for this position. Rohit achieved this milestone in 261 innings, which is 15 innings fewer than Tendulkar's 276. The record for the fastest to reach this figure remains with Virat Kohli, who accomplished the feat in just 222 innings.
Fewest inngs to 11,000 ODI runs
222 Virat Kohli
261 Rohit Sharma
276 Sachin Tendulkar
286 Ricky Ponting
288 Sourav Ganguly
Rohit Sharma has achieved the remarkable feat of scoring 11,000 runs in the second least number of balls faced, with only Virat Kohli (11,831 balls) surpassing him in this regard (Rohit faced 11,868 balls).
Currently, Rohit ranks behind former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly, who has 11,363 runs, in the overall list of highest run-scorers in One Day Internationals (ODIs). Sachin Tendulkar remains the all-time leader with an impressive total of 18,246 runs from 463 matches.
Virat Kohli, with 13,963 runs in 299 ODIs, entered his latest match just 37 runs shy of becoming the third player in history to reach the 14,000-run milestone in 50-over cricket.
In the context of overall ODI runs, former Sri Lankan captain Kumar Sangakkara holds the second position with 14,234 runs from 404 matches.
Rohit, recognized as one of the most successful openers in this format, ranks second for the most sixes hit, having cleared the boundary 338 times, trailing only Pakistan's Shahid Afridi, who has 351 sixes.
With an average nearing 50, Rohit has accumulated 32 centuries and 52 half-centuries. Following him in the list of highest run-scorers are former captains Rahul Dravid (10,889 runs) and MS Dhoni (10,773 runs), contributing to India's impressive representation, with six players among the 15 who have surpassed the 10,000-run mark in ODI cricket.
After dispelling doubts with his 32nd ODI century in the second home match against England earlier this month, Rohit commenced his Champions Trophy campaign with a similar vigor. He effectively utilized his signature pull shot against bowlers Mustafizur Rahman and Taskin Ahmed to secure boundaries.
Just as it appeared he might conclude the match swiftly, Rohit was dismissed by Taskin in the final over of the powerplay while attempting to hit the fast bowler over the infield, resulting in a catch in the inner ring. Nevertheless, Rohit's brisk innings of 41 runs off 36 balls provided India with a strong start in their pursuit of 229 runs.
