Rohit Sharma Roars Back to Form with 32nd ODI Century Ahead of Champions Trophy

Rohit Sharma, the captain of the Indian cricket team, has made a triumphant return to form, much to the delight of countless cricket enthusiasts, by scoring a century against England in the second ODI held in Cuttack. He reached his hundred in a mere 76 balls, showcasing his prowess and providing a compelling response to his critics. Rohit's recent struggles had been a source of concern, not only for his fans but for himself as well; however, his batting performance was reminiscent of his explosive 'Hitman' persona. This marks Rohit's first ODI century since his innings against Afghanistan in the 2023 World Cup and his first in international cricket since scoring 103 against England in Dharamsala last year. In terms of ODI centuries, only Virat Kohli (50) and Sachin Tendulkar (49) have more than him.

After facing significant challenges during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia, where he failed to score in the series and was dismissed while attempting one of his signature aerial shots in the previous match in Nagpur, Rohit appeared determined and focused. With mounting speculation regarding his future, this century arrived at a crucial moment. India is poised to compete for the Champions Trophy, a title they last won when Rohit was just beginning his role as an opener, making vital contributions. To secure back-to-back ICC trophies, nothing less than excellence will suffice.

The Rohit Sharma of old

Rohit appeared to be in his element from the very first delivery he faced. Although the ball was delivered low, his reflexes were sharp, allowing him to effectively cover its line and defend it. Just six balls later, the captain scored his first boundary, a fortunate edge that sailed over the slips. If that did not sufficiently demonstrate his return to form, the subsequent delivery showcased a classic Rohit shot. The same stroke that had led to his dismissal in the previous match was executed flawlessly this time, sending the ball soaring for six. Both the crowd and commentators recognized that Rohit was back in action.

From that moment, he was unstoppable. Two balls later, he executed a cover drive that also cleared the boundary for six. Another six followed two overs later, struck on the rise. This display of confidence prompted Buttler to introduce Adil Rashid, hoping the slower pace would curtail the barrage.

However, that was not the case. Rohit cut the leg-spinner to bring up his 58th ODI fifty. In just six deliveries, he managed to hit three fours and a six. In pursuit of 305 runs for victory, Rohit and Shubman Gill formed a formidable opening partnership, adding 136 runs together—marking their sixth-century partnership. While they were at the crease, Rohit operated at full throttle; however, the dismissals of Shubman Gill (60 off 52 balls) and Virat Kohli (5 off 8) briefly disrupted their momentum.

While batting on 88, Rohit struck Mark Wood for his sixth six of the innings, moving into the 90s. He followed this with another six when in 96, bringing up a remarkable century. His celebration was understated, consisting of a simple bat raise, followed by a reverse sweep for four just two balls later. Ultimately, he was dismissed for 119 runs off 90 balls, having significantly contributed to India's pursuit of victory.
