Rohit Sharma Returns to Ranji Trophy: Set to Play Under Ajinkya Rahane's Captaincy

India's captain Rohit Sharma is gearing up to return to red-ball domestic cricket after a decade away. He was named in Mumbai's 17-player squad for their upcoming match against Jammu and Kashmir on January 23. Rohit has been struggling with his form lately, so he’ll be looking to find his rhythm again.
At 37, Rohit will be playing in the Ranji Trophy match under Ajinkya Rahane's captaincy. The squad also includes players like Shivam Dube, Shreyas Iyer, and Shardul Thakur.
It's been a long time since Rohit last played a red-ball game for Mumbai, with his last appearance dating back to 2015.
Yashasvi Jaiswal, an opening batter, has also been selected for the match against Jammu and Kashmir at the MCA-BKC Ground in Mumbai.
Rohit managed to score only 31 runs in five innings against Australia and even opted out of the final Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground due to his poor performance.
Following India's 1-3 defeat in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, the BCCI has made it a requirement for centrally contracted players to participate in domestic cricket.
Rohit practices with the Mumbai team
Rohit Sharma hit the training ground with the Mumbai Ranji Trophy team at Wankhede Stadium last week. A few days later, he was spotted jogging at BKC Ground.
When the squad for the upcoming Champions Trophy was announced, Rohit shared his thoughts on the BCCI's directive for players to participate in domestic cricket with their state teams whenever they can.
"If you look back over the last six or seven years, there hasn’t been a stretch where we’ve had 45 days at home while cricket was happening," Rohit mentioned.
You know how it is when the IPL wraps up and there’s a bit of a lull afterward? But if you look at our domestic season, it kicks off around October—maybe even September—and wraps up by February or March. That’s also when India plays a bunch of international matches. So, for those players who aren’t involved in certain formats and have some free time, they’ll jump into the domestic cricket scene, he mentioned.
On another note, Virat Kohli and KL Rahul will be sitting out the upcoming Ranji Trophy matches for Delhi and Karnataka due to fitness issues.
Here’s the Mumbai squad: Ajinkya Rahane (C), Rohit Sharma, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Ayush Mhatre, Shreyas Iyer, Siddhesh Lad, Shivam Dube, Hardik Tamore (WK), Akash Anand (WK), Tanush Kotian, Shams Mulani, Himanshu Singh, Shardul Thakur, Mohit Awasthi, Sylvester Dsouza, Royston Dias, Karsh Kothari.
