Mumbai: The crowd at Wankhede Stadium on Sunday displayed a mix of loyalties, with an equal representation of yellow and blue as they witnessed a clash between the two most successful franchises in IPL history — the Mumbai Indians and the Chennai Super Kings. Despite the Mumbai Indians securing a decisive victory, both teams had reasons to celebrate. MI rejoiced in the resurgence of their batting star and former captain Rohit Sharma, who scored an impressive 76* off 45 balls, while CSK found hope in the emergence of Ayush Mhatre, a promising talent for the future.

However, the current season remains challenging for CSK as a team. This match lacked competitiveness, with MI achieving a 9-wicket victory by successfully chasing down the target of 177 runs in just 15.4 overs.

As MI began their chase, Rohit Sharma was eager to find his form. After several low scores, he had shown signs of improvement in the previous match against SRH, although a soft dismissal had thwarted his efforts. On Sunday, he was determined to make an impact.

CSK's new ball bowling proved to be a vulnerability, and Rohit seized the opportunity. Jamie Overton delivered a short ball on Rohit's legs, which he sent soaring into the upper tier of the Vijay Merchant Pavilion. Once he broke free from his initial constraints, Rohit continued to flourish. Khaleel Ahmed attempted to bowl fuller in search of movement, but when he misjudged his length, Rohit effortlessly flicked him for six and followed up with a boundary through cover.

Unlike his previous innings in the tournament, Rohit was not rushed. When R Ashwin, CSK’s Impact Sub, was brought into the attack, Rohit chose to exercise patience. After carefully observing the veteran off-spinner during the Powerplay, he unleashed a slog-sweep that sailed deep into the mid-wicket stands. While Rohit gradually regained his rhythm, Suryakumar Yadav, with a score of 68* off 30 balls, showcased his aggressive intent, dismantling CSK’s spinners with a series of sweeps and powerful shots.

Mhatre impresses

Batting Initially, CSK altered their approach by incorporating a youthful element into the team. At just 17 years and 278 days, the club announced the signing of their newest player, Mhatre, through a post on their social media, marking a memorable day for the young Mumbai talent as he made his IPL debut.

Unfazed by the intense MI-CSK rivalry, Mhatre showcased his intent with his very first shot. Although he couldn't clear the infield, he executed a lofted flick over deep mid-wicket and a powerful pull that sent the ball soaring into the stands off left-arm bowler Ashwani Kumar, energizing the CSK fans present. While Ashwani's early wicket of Rachin Ravindra was a setback, Mhatre's elegant batting during the Powerplay helped CSK reach 48/1, allowing them to gain an early advantage.

However, Mhatre's impressive debut innings of 32 runs off 15 balls (including four fours and two sixes) came to an end as he attempted to hit a boundary. MI then tightened their grip on the game by introducing spin bowlers. Both Mitchell Santner and Will Jacks varied their pace effectively, resulting in CSK going 27 balls without a boundary.

This pattern characterized CSK's innings, where they would gain momentum only to have it snatched back by MI. Ravindra Jadeja received another promotion to the No. 4 position and, alongside Shivam Dube, formed a solid partnership, accumulating 79 runs off 50 balls for the fourth wicket.

With CSK at 142/3, they appeared to be gearing up for the final overs, but Jasprit Bumrah had different plans. The leading pacer was strategically saved for the middle and death overs, where he dismissed Dube for 50 runs off 32 balls (with two fours and four sixes) using a slower delivery, and he silenced the crowd further by removing MS Dhoni cheaply for just 4 runs. This effort limited CSK to a total of 175 runs, with Bumrah finishing as the standout bowler, recording figures of 4 overs, 25 runs, and 2 wickets.
