Rohit Sharma Matches Glenn Maxwell in Unwanted Record After Nightmare IPL 2025 Start vs CSK
2 days ago | 5 Views
Rohit Sharma, the former captain of the Mumbai Indians, experienced a disappointing beginning to his IPL 2025 campaign, as he was dismissed for a duck in his opening match against the Chennai Super Kings at MA Chidambaram Stadium. The explosive opener struggled to cope with Khaleel Ahmed's precise bowling and was out on the fourth delivery of the innings. The left-arm fast bowler delivered an in-swinging ball, and Rohit attempted a flick shot in hopes of scoring a boundary, but instead, he found Shivam Dube positioned at mid-wicket. This marked the third occasion in which Khaleel had dismissed him in IPL history.
Rohit entered the IPL on a high note following his Champions Trophy victory with the Indian national team, where he played a pivotal role by scoring a vital half-century in the final against New Zealand in Dubai. However, he was unable to replicate that form in Chennai.
With his score of zero on Sunday, he joined Dinesh Karthik and Glenn Maxwell in the unfortunate record of the most ducks in IPL history, totalling 18.
Most Ducks in the Indian Premier League
Rohit Sharma has recorded 18 ducks in 253 innings.
Glenn Maxwell has also achieved 18 ducks but in just 129 innings.
Dinesh Karthik has 18 ducks across 234 innings.
Piyush Chawla has 16 ducks in 92 innings.
Sunil Narine has 16 ducks in 111 innings.
Before the toss, Rohit addressed the Mumbai Indians' concerning trend of losing their opening match in the IPL for the past 12 seasons, expressing his desire for a change this year.
“We have been striving for several years to secure a victory in our first match. We have come close on a few occasions, but it has eluded us for many years,” Rohit stated during an interview with JioHotstar.
“The ultimate objective is more significant than the initial one. We recognize that we have not won the first match in quite some time, and we will endeavour to alter that. This is a new team, and we do not wish to impose excessive pressure on ourselves. Our focus should remain on our performance,” remarked the former captain of MI.
CSK elect to bowl first against MI
Chennai Super Kings won the toss and chose to bowl first against the Mumbai Indians, who were without their captain, Hardik Pandya. In his absence, Suryakumar Yadav took charge of the five-time champions at Chepauk, as Pandya was serving a one-match suspension from the previous season due to slow over-rate issues. For the Mumbai team, Ryan Rickelton and Satyanarayana Raju made their IPL debuts, while Will Jacks, a former player for RCB, and Mitchell Santner, who previously played for CSK, also featured in their first match for Mumbai.
